Default How about new axles?

I haven't seen this ever really come up in the FI section so I'd thought I'd post this topic to get a little discussion going.

For those of us that want to up the boost, say to 15-20 PSI, creating quite a bit of power, wouldn't upgrading the axels be a good thing? I mean, everyone saw that ZPI video where they snapped an axle.

I know there are PLENTY of other concerns with that high of boost, but I want to talk about the problems with that kind of power touching the ground.

you will also have big traction issues and probably loads of wheel hop which can be very damaging to your drivetrain

I think you were talking about my video where I snapped my axle?

We've still been working on making racing axles for the scion tC. We actually made some phone calls last week alone so we'll see how things develop. It's hard/expensive getting people on board with this. Maybe I can compose a pre-order setup to help us fund full development of the axles.

ZPI never snapped an axle. It was us on 8.5 PSI.

replacing axels is all well and good, but if you are talking about pushing serious power (15-20psi+) you are also talking about increasing torque upwards of 180-240+lbs/ft over stock. If something is going to break, something will break and in essence all you would be doing is shifting the failure point by increasing the strength of the axles. If worst came to worst I would rather replace an axle (if it failed at the u-joint) than tear down/replace a tranny because of an eaten gear, or have to tear down the block because of the crankshaft twisting. Now I'd love to see someone try to get the wheel and hub assembly off after twisting an upgraded axel to failure point at the shaft.

speaking of which, I don't think Dezod ever answered the question as to WHERE the axle failed, whether at the joint or split at the shaft.

I snapped the axle where the driveshaft hits the bearing/speed sensor area on the passenger side. That's also the longer axle that broke, not the shorty.

I have not spoken with The Drive Shaft Shop. I'll give them a call or Paul will call and see if there's anything we can work out. I won't mention other names we have spoken with but right now we are still exploring all options. Thanks for the link.

They make good, strong axles. I've seen them on turbo quad 4's holding up to some insane power at the drag strip.

Whoa whoa whoa.. Backup..

We have never broken a stock tC axle under any condition, be it serious drag racing, tests of acceleration on the street, gross displays of horsepower, or retarded burn outs in the parking lot..

If you're talking about the Quaife video, that wasn't a broken axle.. that was just an open differential.. Ala one wheel peel.

no, he meant Dezod, not ZPI.

He was confused.

Joe_Dezod broke it at the drag strip.
