Default How many inches should the piping be for a turbo?

I'm planning on getting a turbo, but I want to start preparing for it by getting the downpipe, s pipe, all the pipage... catback, and axle back...

As you can tell I barely know what I'm talking about.

I would like to get Greddy, but the one that they have for tC's is a 2.25 inch.

The one coming off the turb is a 2.5 inch... should the exhaust system all be 2.5? or could it go from 2.5 to 2.25??

Does it even matter?

Thanks in advance for your help...

How much boost? 2.5" is plenty for most stock-motor applications. When you get to higher boost settings you want 3".

id say go 3" that way if you are pushing more boost later, it will be better, and with turbos, the more free flowing the better (at least on the exhaust side going to the muffler)

I'm planning on going on 7-8 pound of boost for now.

Then when I get some internals done I'll up it.

even after internals...2.5" is fine. You don't want to reduce it to 2.25" and you really don't need to go over 2.5", but if ur pushin 300 + whp, you can go up to 3"...but again 2.5" will still suffice

Not FI, but looked into it. Last time I checked Dezod's site he was offering an exhaust for turbo tC that was 2.5", and his turbos get up to 300whp I believe.

Some folks believe that bigger is always better when it comes to exhaust pipe size. But even a 1/4" bigger pipe makes a big difference in exhaust scavenging.

that's why i stated that even after 300whp...2.5" will suffice

sweet. I think I'm going to go with a 2.5

Now does that have to be custom made? Or are there any manufactures who make them?

Because the only thing that I've seen is for a tC is 2.25... and that's about it.

it works a little differently on a turbo'd car vs. a n/a. you want your exhaust velocity to be higher on a turbod car vs. a n/a car. for a turbo even putting out 7-8 psi you're probably better going 3". and don't EVER go to a smaller size piping, keep it all the same. the reason why you put on an aftermarket exhaust is to get rid of the restriction, right? by going from a 2.5" to a 2.25" your creating the restriction that you're trying to avoid. make sense?

Yea that does make sense....
Now the thing is how to get one... because Greddy, and other manufactures just do 2.25 for the tC. I'm pretty sure everyone that gets a turbo has their piping custom made huh?

any exhaust shop should be able to make you an exhaust no problem. just make sure it's high quality piping, and mandrel bent.

Link to the Dezod turbo exhaust mentioned earlier:

Like D4u2s0t said you could have a local exhaust shop manufacture the same thing for less.

^^ yep. a custom exhaust is going to be cheaper than a pre-fabbed one. the only downside, in my opinion, is that you won't know how it sounds untill it's on your car. and if you don't like it, your SOL.

Dezod has a good exhaust for turbos...and now ZPI has a nice full exhaust for turbos. Another full catback exhaust with 2.5" piping is the ARK N2...don't know how it works though with the turbo as i'm still N/A. But all of these are 2.5" except i believe the new ZPI one is 3"...not sure though...check out their website to see more
