New turbo ideas
Has anyone heard of the new turbo ideas about moving the location of the turbo? I saw a thing on PowerBlock tv where they put the turbo in the rear of the car? I waqs thinking this might be an interesting idea where as when u remove the stock muffler you have alot of space....enough for a turbo and an intake.....http://www.haneyautoperformance.com/...2small_ezr.jpg

The xB's already have a remote turbo kit. It's not positioned in the very rear like an STS kit, but it is located under the car, just a little bit past the front axle. ZPI makes this kit.

I've always been curious about this. If I recall correctly, you don't want too-long turbo piping with a traditional turbo because you can lose boost pressure, right? So wouldn't mounting a turbo many feet further away cause problems?

see thats the common misconseption....theres only loss of 1lb of boost but you drop the temp of the Air by 70 degrees which ends up equalling you 50 hp....seems smarter huh? less pressure on the engine plus more boost what more could you ask for???

The xB ZPI kit uses an oil pump to compensate, but the vacuum lines should be somewhat solid.... running braided lines all the way back for durability would probably add to the benifit though.

This seems like it might be doable on a tC and for around $1000 or a little more. But the oil pressure is what has me worried. You say the xB kit uses an oil pump to compensate for the loss. Any idea on where to get one suitable for this? And what specs to use maybe?

Ok so I checked out some sites with the STS kit being installed and it appears that they are using a general purpose 12volt pump. I found something that I think would do the job. Although not this same exact item there are several others that I found as well.

If I get the funds I need I think I am going to try this project with my tC. Shouldnt cost more than $1200. I just hope I can get the piping to fit back into the engine bay from the turbo. Custom piping from an exhaust shop shouldnt cost all that much right? I can do small welding jobs in case I need to add some hangers for the piping. Shouldnt be a problem. Hmmm

Ok I figured in most of the costs and added some extra for anything else I might need and it might come out to about $1100. I think I might try this project out. What do you guys think? Any idea on what size piping to use? 2.25 maybe? 2?

This type of setup doesnt need an intercooler. My pricing is based on a 16g setup at about 6-7psi. I think tuning with this type of setup would be less of an issue than on ZPI's stage 0 kit seeing as how the exhaust manifold is kept in tact along with pretty much everything else. It would be considered though at a later time.

I am so happy I got someone else to try this...if you want man im gonna try and get some measurements and darw up some plans...only one BIG problem...parents took my licsense and my car...its 2 hours away...(im in college no need for a car) so I have nothing to measure other than the other kid here that has a tC but not sure if he'd let me get under it....but if anyone could supply me with a picture of the under body i might be able to fit that piping back to the front....If i were to do this I would def. use and intercooler to make the air even colder.....if you buy core + side cans intercoolers are cheeper....then all u have to do is weld it on.... as for tuning...i HAVE NO IDEA about that stuff...I am totally clueless other than the fact I know u have to monitor boost and such....but also a plate over the setup under the car would be good to have ....like a skid plate but have the front edge of it slightly bent downward to pick up fresh air under the car for the intake....this would keep the turbo protected i'd hope...but yes oil pumps are used alotng with vacum pumps to correct for the extended reach...again any under car pictures would be greatly appreciated.....
