Default Pauter connecting rods do not clear the block!!

Guys,

Some of you might already know I installed a set of K1 Technologies connecting rods on ScionGT35R's engine and they fit like stock. Meaning that they do not require you to modify the block in any way. !

I am building an engine for another car using Wiseco pistons and Pauter rods. The Pauter rods look really strong but after I test fit them I realize that they didn't clear the bottom of the cylinders. These Pauter rods WILL NEED notching the block in order to be used.

You might want to take this into consideration when looking to buy stronger rods!

Thanks for the information, looks like K1 rods will be in my future instead of Pauter. Good to know before extra work was needed.

I like our K1 rods. Sorry to hear about the Pauter rods not fitting properly. Good luck with the build and thanks for sharing the info!

I do like them too!! I think I installed one of the first sets of those rods on SCIONGT35R's car after we talked with Paul about them. !

Problem is that when this customer wanted the rods (K1) they were on backorder from you and instead of waiting he went to the local Speed Shop and ordered the Pauter's! ! If it wasn't because of that problem: the engine would have been already assembled by now. Instead I have to talk the local machine shop to fix this!

Personally I have never built an engine that required notching the block. I guess there is a first time for everything!

If you were to compare the K1 and Pauters to each other, is there a big difference?

Specifically asking in size, weight, materials used, and of course your overall opinion of the two rods?

The Pauter looks like it is going to be installed in a funny car engine! In a side to side comparison they look huge compared to the stock ones. I don't think there is a reason for them being that big. I have installed the K1 's and I think they are the correct size for the job.
The Pauter's in my opinion are overkill and not necessary! The K1's are cheaper and can hold the power that I have thrown at them so far (+500HP on the flywheel and 7,400rpms).

I agree. The K-1s are well designed for what almost all streetable tCs are planning to run. Add the cost factor and it's a win win situation.

Glad to year you've had such great luck with them!

well what does notching the block actually consist of? (sorry for the newb question, but I am unsure exactly what is meant by notching the block).

Is it like boring the cylinder to be bigger, or something else?

Thank you for your help and knowledge.

Sorry! Been busy here the last couple of weeks

Notching the block refers to removing material from the lower part of the cylinder and block to make room for the connecting rod. This only applies to after market rods which are big in size looking it from the side.

This is a side view comparison of the Pauter vs the OEM rod!!

This one is an OEM rod and a K1 technologies rod!

Finally this is the notch that I talk about....

Now the crankshaft can rotate without the Pauter rod hitting the bottom of the cylinder !

Wow I am overwhelmed with the Information you gave me..... thank you so much..... Greatly appreciated . One more quick question if I may.......

If you were to bore out the motor to lets say a 2.6L or a 2.5L would that be sufficient enough to give clearance or would you still have to notch the motor?

Once again thank you for all the help you have given me.

Nope , it would not give sufficient clearance!
The amount of material you remove when boring out the block to 2.5L or 2.6L is very minimal compared with the amount of material needed to be removed to clear the rod!

who cares how they look, you will never see them once you install them

when it comes with them its all about how they perform. looks are null. they can be the prettiest rods in the world but if they dont perform well then they arent worth it

You'll see them again if one comes shooting out the side of your block. Then you can say **** I through a rod but at least it looked good as it went out.

hahahahahaha . Even though that wasn't what I meant, I still got a kick out of that one. To clarify what I meant, was I wonder how the titanium rods look compared to the stock and pauter and k1 ones, but as I recently found out Titanium rods are not a good idea when going FI. But hey to each there own .
