Thumbs up The Standalone/Piggyback ECU List

Nasioc has a nice list of ECU's and a post for each ECU and what is does. I think we can accomplish the same list.

Here's the list so far that i have seen available for the tC.

AEM EMS
AEM F/IC
Motec
Haltech
Hydra
Megasquirt
Dezod Black Box
E-manage/ultimate
Dezod standalone (TBA)

Lets get some comparisons on our cars and hard info on these device all in one thread.

Also, lets keep just ECU info in here so we can keep this down to a page or three.

Dezod Black Box

Standalone or Piggyback?
Piggyback

What does it control?
RPM vs. pressure up to 16 psi, adjusts air/fuel signal to stock ECU

How do you program it?
By serial port within the unit (remove the front cover)

Does it require a reset to load the map?
No but does require that the engine is not running while loading.

Pros?
cheap, allows for partial throttle boost AFR correction when using the SAFC-II.
Cons?
This is not an ECU since is does not control the injector/ignition. Always verify the map before loading, can sometimes load a cell at 25.5. (use the 3d map to check it)

(will add more when i get some time)

Apex-i SAFC-II

Specs?

Adjusts air-fuel ratios via changes to the VAF/MAF/MAP/Karman signal
MAP/MAF transfer correction function
Solenoid control for VTEC, nitrous, etc.
Unit/Chassis operating voltage – 12V negative ground vehicles
Sensor operating range: 0.01V - 5.12V analog voltage signal or Karman frequency

Standalone or Piggyback?
Piggyback

Pros?
cheap, good for small modifications to the engine, allows you to run bigger injectors without a CEL (to a certain point)

Cons?
cant control partial throttle tuning, stock ecu wants to run at 14.7 afr until 4000 rpms.

(will add more soon)

Are they still offering the AEM EMS or did it get discontinued?

Has anyone installed and/or used the UniChip? It's available for the tC and xB as a piggyback. I'm looking for more info.

Unichip

Standalone or piggyback?
Piggyback

Specs?

  • The Unichip Performance Chip kit comes with both the module and harness and is custom programmed for your specific make, model and year vehicle
  • The first control module to maximize performance for both modified and stock vehicles
  • Piggybacks on your ECU to modify the signal and resend it to your vehicle's computer-never altering stock settings
  • Custom tuning accounts for popular aftermarket modifications like intake and exhaust systems
  • Expect sizable gains in horsepower and torque across the entire RPM band
  • Along with power and torque, Unichip Performance Chips optimize drivability by precisely mapping ignition and air/fuel timing
  • Maximizes fuel mileage at partial throttle for daily driving—maximizes horsepower at full throttle for performance driving
  • Invisible to the factory ECU-Unichip Performance Chips never leave a "footprint" and cannot be reflashed by a dealer
  • 2 unique timing maps offer varied levels of performance and adjustments for octane ratings
  • The Plug n' Play harness features factory plugs and connecters for a seamless fit
  • Easily plug the Unichip Performance Chip into your vehicle's ECU in a matter of minutes
  • Your Unichip Performance Chip is backed by a 1-year warranty
  • Not legal for sale or use on pollution-controlled vehicles in the state of California
Pros?
Easy to install, decent price for a piggyback

Cons?
Not user tunable, requires professional tuning (can be costly)

it is really not so hard to tune the unichip. I have been tuning it for almost 3 years now, the difficult part is knowing how to tune toyotas and making sure you have a split second enricher otherwise its almost impossible for a piggy to do a 11.5 build up and still contain oem tuned closed loop for max mpg. I just read, read and read. More about how to tune toyota trims rather than how to use unichip that part was easy!

First of all they pick the FIC because it is cheaper, and much more marketed and because its a lot harder to find a unichip tuner.

On the other side, unichip is more stable, more of the features work as they should, you do not have to add any resistors of any sorts which my friend with the fic had a horror story with trying to find out why the fic was having issues.

Don't get me wrong the FIC is great but there is a reason almost every single Turbo / performance scion shop is carrying unichip now. They have an amazing reputation for working brilliantly with Toyota.

I am a fan of the unichip because i know how to tune it and learned it. FIC and Uni one bases tune on duty cycle the other is on load you would have to learn the software all over to tune the opposite.

I vote unichip but a lot will say FIC because of lack of tuners for unichip, just call aaron from unichip have him send you a kit for 100 bucks and have him do a road tune!

Remember, if you are not boosted now, and you want a perfect boost afr build up aka 11.5/afr BUY THE Split second enricher in addition to either!!! If you want to keep your Stock Closed loop for max MPG
