Default Suckiest Turbo Kit that ever Sucked

Apparently, I have purchased the absolute WORST turbo kit ever concieved (Or at least that seems to be the general consensus).

Please share with me any and all rants, hates, and complaints about the Trubonetics kit and the the Unichip plug and play unit. Personal experience would be better.

I'd ask for positives, but there doesn't seem to be any.

The only issue I ever had with my kit was the bearings going in the turbos. My brother is now using the water cooled bearing turbo from turbonetics and he's been running strong for almost a year on that turbo....2 years on the kit....although 2 blown non water cooled turbos before that.

well, turbonetics turbos tend to blow their seal easily, couplers have been known to blow, some compressor surge from the BOV, improper opening of the wastegate, what else?

can anyone tell me WHY the seals/bearings fail? Perhaps it can be prevented?

Oh, and how will I know when they do fail?

you will know they fail when black smoke is coming out your exhaust in large ammounts! and you will have oil in your intake pipe. as far as prevention... maybe a oil restrictor on the feedline. better return line placement. unsure really..

Well, I read that restricting the oil flow to the bearings (on the tC) was a bad idea. To be honest?....I think cooling a turbo by oil alone seems stupid. But I've bought this beast and I'm determined to make it work...even if it means buying a compatible water/oil cooled turbine.

Not black smoke.....white/blueish smoke. I always got alot of shaft play which is a good sign its blown.

One time the shaft play was soo bad the compressor fan was chipping away because the fins where scrapping the compressor housing!

yeah it seems as though no one has had much issues with the upgraded oil/water cooled ball bearing turbine. might be your best bet.

turbonetics only has problems with their turbos apparently

the rest is all solved with hair spray and proper tightening

I've had good luck with my Tnetics kit. Knock on wood. I think its a tight looking kit. I've been running it at 9.5 psi and it moves FAST. My setup is matched pretty well and it pushes the limits of my Azensis RT-615s. I have about 12,000 miles on it over the last 2 years. All the turbo systems put together for the tC have seen there share of problems due to blown seals, bad installs, and bad driving.

Where did you have it tuned to 9.5 psi? I'd be very interested to know, cause there doesn't seem to be anyone within 300 miles from me that can do it, or even fools with the Unichip.

Stock tune. The guys at Tnetics told me the tune was very conservative and it should be fine to up the PSI a little. My AFRs are in check. It runs great. I know Tnetics pulls a bunch of timing in the tune. I'm planning on getting it tuned and aligned at GRDperformance which is just a few miles from my home. They tune the Unichip and specialize aligning cars that are lowered.

one more stupid question...

How do you adjust the boost/psi? Does it have something to to with the wastegate?

You could get a good manual boost controller for like $40.00 to up the boost. It connects inline on the vacuum hose that goes to the wastegate. You can see it in the pic right off the wastgate it is brass. Better, safer and easier way to up the boost a little would be to get some wastegate shims from Tnetics.

For daily driving I set the boost to what my tires can handle in second gear. 225/45/17 RT-615 FTW!

Wish I had the Hydra I would have it programmed to maintain a safe tune while making 4PSI 1st gear 9PSI 2nd gear, 20 PSI 3rd gear, 25 PSI 4th and 5th. You get the picture. Think thats possible with a standalone.
