Transmission Limits
Hello forced induction fellas. I've searched hi and low for a concrete answer for this so I might as well make it official for those who are also wondering.
Since the magic range for hp/tq on a stock block is around 300-350, considering your engine's built, how much hp/tq can the transmission hold?
And for those running the e351 transmission, at what hp/tq do you see problems?
I don't see any point in dumping money for a bulletproof engine if the transmission can't hang. Thanks in advance

Depends on your driving habits. and what type of racing, for time attack racing I would say 450 WHP that type of racing will definitely heat things up and keep the transmission very busy. For drag racing I would say 500-550 WHP with cool downs, but i would say u will be good for 400 as a safe net as a street car which is also a lot of power for this car on street tires even drag radials. Also don't forget you brought a grocery getter not a real sports car these transmission are holding serious power for grocery getters. To me any thing over 350 is a plus.

Thanks for the response Tom. 400 sounds like a pretty fun number, and I'm assuming you meant 400 to wheels. I don't plan on using my grocery getter for strenuous time attack trials nor for drag racing, but I do enjoy a couple of highway pulls here and there.
Would a transmission cooler act as a prevention for transmission mishaps?

Ive looked into adding a transmission cooler. Its doable, however how much it would help I really dont know. It would be about $300-350 in parts with the most expensive part being a Tilton diff pump. Remember a manual trans doesnt have a pump or pressurized system, so youll have to have a pump to remove and push the gear oil through a cooler. As for what the trans can hold. Ive had my current E351 survive 600-650whp for several pulls without issue, but Ive also blown up 3rd gear in another with 550whp. The main issue tends to be wheelspin/wheelhop. Boost by gear, and some sticky tires tends to help alot.

+1 on what's been said. I Time Attack and run HPDE a lot, and the recommended threshold is 450 and below. Above that, and you will tend to need to rebuild 4th gear. Hence why I can't wait till these prototype gears get done by PTuning. I'll play at 500+whp then.

Thanks for the response fellas. I'll do some more research into the oil cooler solution. I've been following that Ptuning rebuild thread and IIRC someone mentioned that the only thing different is final gear between the 2 transmissions. Thendawg, what's your boost by gear system set up to (regarding psi) if you don't mind me asking. Since you've reached those heights, I'd like to prepare myself with enough knowledge before I pull the trigger and buy my e351 transmission soon.
I'm slowly evolving from the slammed/hellaflush trend and going more towards function and practicality (comes with age I guess) so thanks for bearing with me.
