Default Tuning a turbo auto

So i have been having an issue for a bit and im wondering if anyone has any ideas here. This is all based on street tune - havent had a chance to put it on a dyno yet but im guesstimating around 230-240whp and 235-250wtq. Im running 7-7.5 psi on a T3.t61 - the issue is under w0t the auto cant shift for nothin, when it approaches redline if i dont back off the throttle itll rev all the way to about 6550-6650rpm than fall flat on its face (loosing boost) and shift. The technique i have now mastered is letting off just a tad around 6300rpm and it will shift than i can go back to w0t. The problem is a - i loose a decent bit of boost here - and b its annoying. SO im wondering if i say pull a ton of timing over 6300 rpm would it be in effect able to drop the power through the tranny enough that it will shift normally? Has anyone tried anything like this? Thanks!

3 words my friend Valve Body upgrade, our a/t starts slipping once you start pushin 240 or so, but from what I've seen the VBU clears up the problem up to about 300hp, and if you upgrade the torque converter you can probably get up to 350, get a full built tranny from level10 and it can handle 400+

IPT trans.

Their work is awesome and half the price of level 10. I am installling my valve body today and i cant wait. One of my good friends has a fully built trans of theirs in his car and man does it shift hard.

From what i heard...after rebuilding the whole transmission, you would have to tune the shift points using Greddy Ultimate...bec. SoFloTc's rebuild tranny slipped because something had to be tuned in the shiftpoints.
i hope this helps..

Ditch the auto tranny...

It's the best solution on a street FWD.. it's also the cheapest in the long run.

Fully build the tranny.. dont listen to the Nay sayers. Then line up with them at the strip.

Although the valvebody upgrade does help it doesnt solve all of the shifting problems. I have 260 WHP and I still have to lift a bit to get the trans to shift if not it will slip. So the 300 WHP number is much to high for just a valve body upgrade.

So it appears i didnt explain things right - i know the valve body will help with shifting and i know no matter what i do tuning wise it will still slip - but the issue wasnt about that - the issue was the tranny not wanting to shift at all and the motor would hit fuel cut at 6500 rpm and literally stall until it shifted, making it drive like ____. SO i decided to just test my theory myself. Well i started out pulling 15 degrees of timing at 6300rpm going to 20deg pull at 6500 rpm - and guess what it worked great! You could feel a tad loss of power at redline but no stall and no boost loss of course i still have to let off to minimize slipping but thats not what this is about. I played around with fuel trims over 6200 rpm also to get the afr straight (It was dipping to under 10) and than advanced timing back a tad - i found the perfect setting to be pulling 11 deg of timing at 6300 up to -15 at 6500 rpm. To make it a bit safer i ended up putting it at pulling -12.5 at 6300 than going to -15 at 6500. Also i have a ref point right before the 6300 at 6250 which is set at -3.5 deg - the end of my timing curve so that the large timing pull to reduce power oNLY occurs when the car hits redline. This is working out GREAT and hopefully can help other autos Just remember this WILL NOT eliminate slipping and you cna still easilly damage the tranny, it just aids in the shifting issues

OH yea and chris i agree with you 110% valve body will def not get you to 300whp hopefully it will help with the slipping at 240-250whp but def need to go fully built (clutch packs + tq converter) to get to the 300 range Thatlly be next! I know where a couple auto tranny's are in good shape for $250 picked up And theyre only about 5 hrs from me

^^^^^^^^
WOW Thendawg im so glad this worked for you and im sure it will work for others!! That is a great idea that you have going there!! Keep it up!

240-250 WHP will be great with the valve body upgrade.

Ya I need to get me another auto trans so I can install better cluth packs. Like to have it so I have complete trans ready to go out of the car so I can swap it out in a couple of hours!

Again congrats Thendawg

Thanks chris - if i go down for one of these im sure i could get two and send one to you - shipping is alot cheaper than people try to advertise - the auto tranny weighs in at about 100 lbs and really isnt THAT bulky - i shipped a fully assembled shortblock that weighed in at 139 lbs and it was only $95
