Default turbo question open or closed dump?

I am going boost after I return from Iraq. I leave in January and return sometime between April-June. I know some about turbo's but I would say I am at an intermediate level but no where close to experienced so with that said which is better closed dump or open? What is the benefit of either one and the draw back? Also what spark plugs are you running NGK's or Denso's and what part number? Iridium or Copper?

If your looking to gain more power then go with an open dump. If the cops in your area are big ball busters then do a closed dump. With an open dump, the second that wastegate pops open its gonna get really really loud but will give you a few more hp do the exhaust gases flowing a lot easier and more efficiently. The drawback to running an open dump is all the carbon buildup thats gonna start forming in your engine bay unless you run a tube down and out of the engine bay. Lets just say you decide on running the car with an open dump, make sure you have someone fab up a dump tube instead of just leaving the wastegate open...your engine bay will be black within a month. As far as plugs go, you can do either NGK or denso. Most people seem to be running iridiums at least 1 step colder than the stock heat range, but copper plugs are generally better for boosted applications and they dont cost nearly as much as iridiums. Its all personal preferance as to what plugs to chose. Talk to Garage1217, he actually carries a wide assortment of plugs

I would go closed dump only because you are in the military and there is no telling in what state you'll be stationed in the future. You shouldn't lose that much HP by doing so.

^ Just stay out of high boost in areas you need to be quiet and you'll never know the Open Dump was there...

I love the open dump sound, and it definately gives more HP, with a tube, it's not THAT loud...

My personal preference is closed. To me:

Compressor Scream > Exhaust

An open dump will get you attention at times when you don't want it

I'm sure you can get away with an open dump, it is SC. People get away with murder in this state.
