Default Turbo w/o piggy or standalone roll call!

During the past 2 years at SL I've seen numerous posts from members who are either running turbos or have run turbos without additional engine management such as piggybacks or standalones. The idea here is to compile a list of what worked, what didn't and all the good bad and ugly details. I own a 2008 XB and hope that you guys don't mind me posting this in the 1G TC FI section but this is where all the experience is. There are only a handful of boosted XB2s out there and most of them no longer post here.

I'll go first.

2008 A/T Scion XB (47,000 miles)
'Treadstone' (ebay clone) cast iron T3 manifold
Precision 5031E T3/T04E turbo
Tial F38 wastegate
Greddy type S (ebay clone) BOV
3" intake with draw-thru MAS
12"x12"x3" SMIC
440cc DW inj's
2.5/3" full custom exhaust system
AEM UEGO and boost gauges
Split Second Enricher (O2 signal modifier)
1-step colder NGK iridium plugs
B&M trans cooler (radiator bypassed)
170F Stant thermostat
Throttle body ported and polished w. coolant bypass

220/220 whp/wtq @6 psi on Dynapack dyno
14.33 @97mph best 1/4 mile time @6 psi

Boosted for 2 years and 25k miles now, runs perfect, no CELs, passed emission test, zero problems, lots of fun.

Since Todd of Turbo Toyota's infamy is very unlikely to post in this thread, please allow me to add this for him.

Most of what these guys are saying is true...

dont cut corners....for 98% of the people on this board.

I have customers who buy the correct fuel management, install the kit, think they can install the fuel stuff later....blow there motor and its my fault.....but....

You can use the REFLASH and the injectors(410-440cc) and a small wheel T3/T4 (or a GT28rs for convos sake) at no more than 5 psi and have an awesome tune/powerband.

It actually works well on the stock ecu as well..just dont boost more than 5psi.

I have a car here in AZ thats been running now for almost 2 years on the stock ecu and 440cc injectors at 5psi on a GT28RS and it runs like stock and is a blast to drive.

I dont like promoting it...but it does work and so to answer your question....YES

Regards-

Todd

Stock ECU programming or TRD S/C reflash. There is no other ECU reflash available.

I didnt realize the 2.4 xbs were that quick....impressive setup, and similar to what's going in my TC in a few weeks. I'm curious to know which downpipe are you running with that turbo and manifold?

Thanks. A buddy and I made the 2.5" downpipe. The DP to S-pipe angle is different from the TC so I didn't have much choice. Ancla Motorsports in FL makes the Treadstone kit and their DP should also work. They quoted me $300 for one but wouldn't guarantee fitment unless I bought their $350 manifold instead of the $100 ebay clone. The MIG welds aren't the prettiest but they're strong like bull! lol

So the ebay turbo blew but not the engine. Noted. What psi did you run and did you have other mods like larger inj's, etc.? Good luck with the Evo III turbo.

I got the treadstone turbo and was looking at the ebay knockoff for the downpipe. I wish I had access to custom fab my stuff lol. All I need is the air piping and I'm good to go!!

Thanks for the replies. You guys are a lot braver than I am to try running boost with the stock inectors! My 440's hit ~90% IDC at only 6 psi and ~260 bhp. FWIW, the stock ECU can handle 440cc inj's quite well given a few dozen miles to learn new LTFTs. As an added benefit, 440s richen the open loop AFR to ~11.5:1 which is safer than the ~12.5:1 you're probably seeing with stock inj's.

BTW, does anyone know what the normal AFR is with stock inj's in open loop? I'm guessing 12.5:1 but don't know for sure.

Open loop is 12.7:1 AFR

I missed the handicap parking space before. I'm a little jealous with my bad knee but you may need it a lot more than I do.

I was wondering if you have a wideband AFR gauge and if so, what is your AFR in open loop boost? Have you ever considered dropping in 440cc inj's with a 6 psi spring or are you shooting for 300+ bhp with 630cc and a FIC?

I hope your AFRs aren't too scary bad and good luck with the FIC build. I hope the FIC works better for you than it did for me. It should, it seems to work much better with TCs than XB2s. As for the parking space, Id say you deserve it a lot more than I do. I feel a bit akward about even mentioning my bad knee now. I hope you can continue to pursue your passion for a long time.

As for this thread, I was hoping to hear more from the guys running 410-440cc injectors with or without the TRD SC flash but they don't seem to post much. They probably got tired of hearing about how they'll blow their engine without a piggyhack "tune".
