Venting the Crankcase?
#21
if you want to "vent" your crankcase, install an oil catch can! it actually serves a purpose, and looks better than a stupid filer attached to your valve cover. the main reason i would not vent it, is because IT DOES GET MESSY!!!!!!! if you want oil blowing all over your engine compartment, go for it, but i would highly steer away from it, and just install a catch can

Oil Catch Can Links
I think it's more like where can't you get one. They are universal and avaliable just about everywhere. One of the nicer one's that I've seen is the Greddy one found here:
Ptuning has them: http://www.ptuning.com/html/search-r...l=model&Brand=
Dezod has them: http://www.dezod.com/cat_oil_catch.cfm
Hope that helps. And of course if you're into making your own there are DIY articles just google "oil catch can" or something to that effect.

if it's just for mess, i'm not worried about it, as my hose points down. but I was told that it was actually bad for the engine.
Here is my question, (cleanliness and environment aside) what is SAFER for my turbo/motor:
Just leaving the crankcase vented with nothing on it? Or routing it into the intake pipe with NO catch can?

Yes and Yes.
that's what the catch can is for...it catches the oil blowby, keeping it out of your intake and your turbo. You DO have to empty it out, but we don't get that much, and I'm pretty sure anyone who has had one has not had to empty it yet after over a year or so!

so if you left it open it would be better, your engine bay would just be a little messier... hey meaty, why not get a catch can then maybe running the output side to the vacuum block.... wouldn't that have the same effect as routing it back to the valve cover??? To me that would be a better, more cost effective solution than what you were saying earlier in the thread.

You do not want your vacuum line connected to the valve cover. Oil vapors would get into your BOV, wastegate, boost gauge and other devices. This could make a very sticky mess, causing things to stop functioning properly.

He's right about going directly to the intake with no catch can lower your effective octane rating of your fuel, which increases the chance of knock.
The best overall solution that addresses more problems than anything else, would be having a catch can in line with the hose going from your valve cover to the intake pipe. This addresses basically everything.

swear I posted that in my post as well....anyway...
but what about the rest of t_urbo_C_harged response? Which is safer? Open or to the intake with no catch can?

Which I will be offering a kit. Valve cover/2 bungs with the fittings and steel braided lines and the ventilated catch can
But if you cannot do a catch can......leave it open.......and save for a catch can
Regards-
Todd
PS- a cheap filter will work in the mean time, just clean it....but recirc is a bad idea[/quote]

Well...if you ahve the output open, it's really not better then a filter...if you rout the other end into the intake, the incoming air helps create a vacuum in the valve cover to help pull the blow by into the catch can.
Right now, I just have my old tube pointing down.
