Turbo kits with cats are NOT legal for the tC in the state of California. Anything you have to modify or remove original emissions equipment is illegal.

Yes, the Supercharger is the only CARB legal way to boost, but if don't bring attention to yourself and go to the right smog checks, you can run a turbo. You've got 4 years from the time you purchase your car to figure it out.

Its not neccesarily the turbo that will get you the ticket, but its the fact the the exhuast manifold for the turbo will eliminate the catalytic converter in the original header. So you will most likely get a ticket and a removal order for violating state and federal EPA laws for removign the primary cat.

It's a federal offense to remove or replace a working catalytic converter. In all states, not just California.

wasn't this covered already??? Ok but heres the deal
Factory exhaust (Header all the way to the tip) Is to remain factory or factory equivelant, lengthening removing or enlarging in not permissable. Thats it as cut and dry as possible. If you have an @ss of a cap pull you over he can give you a ticket for your aftermarket exhaust if he so desired...

So all in all:
Drive smart, shift accordingly, and a cop will most likely not mess with you...If he does, you're screwed if he wants to bend you over there's nothing you can do about it lol

If you get pulled over and IF the officer pops your hood, he may ask for the CARB exemption number and/or sticker. If you cannot supply one, the officer has the discretion to issue a "fix-it" ticket in which you have 30 days to bring your car into compliance, or in some cases, the officer may have the vehicle towed (at the owners expense) and tags suspended until the vehicle is brought into compliance.

Needless to say, you want to avoid either situation so keep it mellow when you're on the road. If you install a turbo in California, be sure you have access to a smog station that can keep you "legal".

*Modification or removal of original emissions equipment without CARB certification in the State of California is illegal*

For Cali, we can run exhaust legally, they just have to comply with a 95db +/- 1.5db limit, and not have removed any cats or the exhaust manifold.

They can try and pull anything off, but just as long as you have your OEM Exhaust Manifold/ 2 cats in place and comply with sound, it's A-OK. Trust me, among me and my friends we have all had to deal with this. All you have to do is show the judge that the Emissions Equipment is in place and you comply with sound.

The law changed recently so you're both right. It's at the officer's discretion to pull you over and issue a ticket for having a loud exhaust, whether it's OEM or not, and a roadside SPL test is not required. So if a cop sees you have a "drift spec" exhaust and feels it's a little on the loud side, unless you are carrying a certificate stating your exhaust is under 95 dB, he can issue a fix-it ticket... yes, the law sucks.

It only changed about 2 years ago. I buy Codebooks every year , just to keep up with the changes.

Funny Stuff: Me and my friends were (long story) chillin with a Cop from Corona the other night and he was looking over our cars, the only thing he found that wasnt legal on my car was my MMW Header.

Yea, they dont even need a db meter, they can use their proffesional opinion to issue the ticket... LoL
