Default Why is the TRD SC for the tc so finicky about installation?

Hi everyone,

Can someone summarize why the TRD tc SC installation is so finicky? Is it because it's just a really bad bolt-on design?

I see threads here all the time about busted seals, oil leaking from every orifice and ruining the cats, bearings being rubbed down into nothingness, brackets breaking, engines exploding, etc. Can someone summarize it for me? (maybe synthetic motor oil actually disolves TRD tc SC O-rings. Heh.)

If you have to feed your car a qt everytime you gas up....that's not right. Even if it is a supercharger (right?) I know you have to check the filters, and the belts on the TRD / Vortech SC but what is it about the install / design that is so $*((&@&(#$($ hard.

I find that a lot of the time that people install something that requires proper alignment (pumps, anything with a sealed shaft, etc) they do it improperly and something goes wrong.

I dont know what exactly is involved with the SC setup, since I have never seen one close up, but install error is always one thing to look for.

Mabe it has to do with the generic design that they just adapt to fit different apps. Guys are blowin their engines on dealer installs with no mods. Thats just scary!

Maybe its just because this is the internet and small issues get blown out of proportion. This topic has been tossed around alot. The real issue is that a person who has a good experience will tell 2-3 people and a person with a bad experience will tell 11. That's a statistically proven fact. There are enough people on here that have never had a problem and when a new thread pops up about have you ever had a problem with your supercharger some of us chime in. While the ones who have had a problem always chime in. You keep reading about issues because thats all anyone posts about. How many threads have you seen just randomly started about "Wow my supercharger works great I've never had a problem in 10k miles." People don't start threads like that. However since I brought it up I have 10k with no issues, With a header, custom intake, nst pully set, bpv, header wrap, vented catch can, and its dealer installed. Had most of this since day one and still no issues. I have a friend with almost 20k on his now with similar mods with no issues aswell.

^^^Great summation. Posts on here are not put up showing great things, becuase we EXPECT them to work. This makes it seem like everyone is having problems, which is not the case at all. As the old saying goes, "the squeeky wheels always gets the oil".

the other problem is just reality..most of your local toyota service stations are used to doing oil changes, recall service and putting wiper fluid in your reservoir.
they do not install turbo's or s/c's or do 8 hour builds every day.
so imagine giving someone who is good with a wrench on a car a 50 page document on an install that needs to be precise, a box of parts and say "go do!" that's like giving the same thing to you or me...only you or me..we might ask buddy for assistance, we might go on the net for additional info...we take our time...
trd does not apparently have a robust training program for the service techs..THAT is the real problem.

what they need to create is a few regional centers of excellence..so you get maybe 'TRD authorized' centers. They send the guys to training, they know all of the foibles, and they are the only ones you go to for real performance part upgrade. Leave the oil changes to your local yokal.

Everything has a proper way to be installed and a million improper way to be installed. If you follow the instructions like you are supposed to then everything works fine. The problem is (as much as I hate to admit it) there are some techs that have the "I've been working on cars forever" attitude and "I know what I'm doing" and don't really follow the instructions to the T. If you don't tighten the bracket down in the proper sequence like in the instructions it's going to cause issues.

I agree with that if the person thinks he knows everything an dont follow the directions things do happen like i have extra bolts/pieces ect.. an things will happen to the engine and to the car..

I received my monthly scion says newsletter and it shows that you can order parts indiviually now for the 05-06 supercharger...the blower itself is listed as around $1600 MSRP
Injectors were like $500 for the set

$1600 is still better than $3200, even though 1600 is still a bit steep.

It's been on scionasg.com for a few months now. That's MSRP though we'll sell all that stuff cheaper.

It’s a mechanical devise, you’re always going to have a few fail somewhere. Somehow I found a way to burn up 2: one with a seal the other with a bearing….. took out the engine. What are the odds, although they were both installed at the same place by the same person…..

Installation is everything, I never had one problem with my supercharger and I beat the living heck out my car racing over and over (and I did take good care of course). You all have good point about the way the SC has been, but it does not rule out the kit being unreliable nor fun.

hey trdsparks, are these the only parts needed to replace the 07 supercharger airbox?
I have the lower and upper tubes that connect to the engine and supercharger, but the airbox assembly was missing from my kit (i bought it off craigslist used for 1500)

thanks for the help!
