Default Alpine time correction for tC

I set up the time correction on my old Alpine 7894 today. These are the values I got:

FL: 38" = .96m = 1.6ms
FR: 53" = 1.35m = 0.5ms
RL: 25" = .64m = 2.6ms
RR: 45" = 1.14m = 1.1ms
SUB: 60" = 1.52m = farthest

These values ought to work even if you don't have a sub, there will just be a bit of extra delay across all channels that would have no effect.

Notes: I'm 6' 1" tall so I'm higher up and farther back than a shorter person would be. I took the measurements for each side to my ear on that side of my head. I used the mids in the front door because they seem to put out a lot more of the important sounds (guitar, vocal) than the tweeters.

If anyone needs help figuring out the time correction I'd be glad to help.

Did you hear any difference? I was gonna have my local Alpine shop do it for my 9835 but then I decided not to ... Did it make a big difference?

I do notice a difference. For me, it enhances the stereo "surround" effect. It sounds like you are more in the sweet spot for stereo imaging. But it's not perfect, as just time correction is not enough to solve all of the problems of car speaker placement. Closer speakers still sound louder (which of course can be addressed with balance & fade), and the sound is still colored by things like the speakers being at different angles relative to your ears and sound bouncing off of different obstacles before it gets to your ears. So the left speakers may sound slightly different than the right, but the stereo imaging will sound better.

By enhancing your (driver's seat) stereo imaging, you will be degrading it for the other positions. Some people don't want to use it for that reason, but I figure that I drive alone a lot, most people riding shotgun wouldn't notice or care, and damn it, I spent all the money on this crap!

I don't really have anyone in my car either ... Its usually just me ... I think I may adjust the time correction and see how it is ... Did you do it your self or have an Alpine shop do it? I know you need a special tape measure from Alpine to do it!

I just did it myself. The instructions in the owners manual are very confusing, so I'll give you the simple version. It only takes about 20 minutes to take the measurements and do the math. All you need is a measuring tape, pen & paper and a calculator.

1. Measure the distances from the speakers to your ears. I used left ear for left speakers, right for right. I tried to get the end of the tape measure right by the middle of the midrange driver. Be sure to sit in your normal driving posture.

2. Convert those inch measurements to meters: multiply them by 0.0254.

3. Find the difference between the farthest speaker (subwoofer if you have one, otherwise the FR speaker) and the other speakers: Subtract their distances from the distance to the farthest.

4. Convert those distance differences to time differences: divide them by .343. This gives you the time delay in milliseconds. Round to the nearest tenth.

Now you just need to enter those milliseconds values into the Alpine deck. I'll explain how it works on my deck, but it's a couple of years old so it may be different on newer units.

5. Press the Time Correction (T. CORR) button until it shows TCR MANUAL. After a second it will show the value for FL. Turn the **** to adjust the value. Press BAND to switch to the next speaker. After entering values for each speaker, press T. CORR again to exit. There is nothing to input for a subwoofer. If you don't have a sub, the FR will remain at 0.

6. You're done.

And the funny part is that I made it way easier to understand than the owner's manual does.

Using the distance number you posted, the i-personalize calculator on alpines site, gave different numbers.

FL-1.1
FR-0.0
RL-2.1
RR-0.6

Subtracting 0.5 from each of the numbers listed in the first post wil give you these numbers.
