Amp going into protect mode

Amp going into protect mode
I have 2 12s hooked up to a 600 watt boss amp (got it for free lol). Everything was fine and it hit hard for a good while but now i find my amp goes into protect mode when i turn the bass **** up. Gain is only up a little past halfway but heres the strange thing, it doesnt really do it unless the car is on and at full voltage. I just recently had to buy a new fuse holder because my last one melted (cheap 8 gauge plastic one lol i bought a bigger one) so i thought that was why it was cutting off. I did seem to find the amp gets hot but it'll cut off as soon as i turn it up sometimes. But see the power wire almost seems like its getting pretty hot, which i never noticed before back in the day. This is driving my crazy and i dont want to go buy a new amp if for some reason my wires are getting hot making the amps heat up. I appreciate any suggestions.

Your amp could be smoked. Go buy a new amp, and stay away from "BOSS" as I am sure thats like radio shack quality. I have alpine and JBL amps, and have never had an issue in the last 8-10 years with either. Also, you may want to re-wire your setup, and use quality cables. They dont have to be high-end, but you dont want an "ebay" kit that handles 250w. I always use either phoenix gold, or rockford wiring.

Yeah haha someone gave me that amp so its not like i was like oooh boss i need that lol. I do have to say that amp served me well though. My wiring isnt the most expensive but its not like ebay crap either, I bought it from a local audio shop its just a smaller gauge. I do need to upgrade that now that im getting into a lot more power than I used to run. Thanks for the advice.

Even if it is an 8 gauge wire, it may not be a "true" 8 gauge. Most of the time on the cheaper wire there is more insulation than wire, so it has the appearance of being an eight gauge.
I would upgrade your power wire, and then measure out your subs. Are they dual voice coil or single? Then you need to figure out what ohms your amp can run at. I wouldn't run it anything lower than 2 ohms.
