a single sq10 to replace the right side foam piece (eD has the sub and box for it) will sound just great.

You have any pics? Since I have a 200rms 8 right now - i think adding another in a ported box...that will sound nice. I just dont want to turn up the juice on a hot day and hear them popping. ..thats why im wondering. Right now my 8inch lasted for 6 years because I pushed it to the max and then turned it down a few notches ...all the time. Since I didnt have it popping it lasted. But ...im lookin for more juice now. Im thinking that it should be ok but im just wondering.

I dont want a huge box in my trunk. I want the smallest box that will allow the subs to hit right.

i actually thought they were nitrious bottels in his car. I then saw the subs and wish it was nitrious. that was overkill on the audio

lol, yea I don't really use my trunk soI don't mind having very little trunk space. When I had the subs in the sealed enclosures I had alot of space.

This pic is sloppy sorry. The box is pushed back so the rear seats are at full recline. So if I had the box pushed all the way back to the seat when they are upright, that will probably provide an additional 6-8 inches of space.

I dont use my trunk much either but its just the fact that I want everything clean looking. Did you build that box yourself?

I modified the stock sub encloser to fit 2 - 8" Memphis M-Class subs. I sealed the enclosure and the airspace works out pretty good. I should probably put a block in there to reduce it a little bit. Overall I am very pleased with the sound. It blends with the stock speakers nicely and is not overpowering, yet I can still turn it up and hear nice deep clean bass. Also, using the stock encloser still allows me to have plenty of trunk space, and maintain a semi-factory look.

I have been very pleased with the setup. I wrapped the factory box with sound deadening, and used some spray deadening on the inside to make it less boomy. I ran power and ground cables for my amp, and used a line output converter on the factory sub plug to get my RCA inputs. I also used the remote wire from the factory plug. Overall the install was very simple.

I like it because I still have my spare tire, I still have space in my trunk, and everything still looks factory.

Yes, I came off the remote wire at the back of the factory head unit and put the switch in the panel next to the steering column.

The key to getting subwoofer (or any low frequency) output is isolating the front of the speaker from the rear - generally in the form of a "baffle" - the piece the speaker's mounted to. The tC's rear speakers are mounted on metal, but not at all isolated from...anything, really. If you pull the rear panel, you'll see what I'm talking about. Also, you'll want to mount ANY speaker, especially subwoofers to a VERY sturdy baffle.

Generally speaking, a subwoofer will perform better if installed in a corner are of the car, most commonly near the tail lights/rear bumper. Yes, boxes up against the rear seat facing the back of the car will perform well too. The polar opposite of the ideal situation would be to use subwoofers mounted in the rear speaker locations. To expand on this, let's pretend you built sealed enclosures where the rear speakers are located. The distance between the driver's side subwoofer and passenger's side (something like 4.5 feet) is in the range of the wavelength of bass you'll be asking those speakers to play (below ~80hz), and you'll kill the output due to phase cancellation. Ideally, you'll want the subwoofers next to each other, or at a similar distance to the listeners.

To get back on topic - will 8" subs perform well? The simple answer is YES. The more cone surface are you have, the better. If we compare SIMILAR subs (not a 'wimpy' 8" to a 'super' 10"), (2) 8"s have more than a single 10", and the output will be cleaner because they won't have to pump in and out to get the same amount of output. The LESS your speakers move, the cleaner the output!

To cover all my bases, you should be realistic with your SPL (output) expectations. Asking a pair of 8"s to blow out your windows is a bit much. For most daily driving music levels, careful driver selection, box design, and installation, will yield good performance.

Nice post. I have a few pics to add to it. I just baffled my rear speakers and dynomatted the metal (thin piece of garbage) that the speaker is attached to. Behind the speaker (the side panel) was already raamatted 3x's over but since I matted the whole car (last year about 13months ago)....after 2 full days of taking the car apart ..matting...and putting it back together ...I didnt care at all about the speakers. Now - 3 weeks ago - I amped and finished the setup with baffles. The job is ultimately ghetto. I had the infinity speakers for 6 years (from my old truck) and they are still going strong, so I used them for my car. I took sealer and applied it to the baffle and pressed the speaker onto it. The baffles I used were from crutchfield. Anybody that needs them...get the slimmer ones. I used the standard ones and they were over and inch too deep. I had to bend the baffle and fold it under. If the speakers were new I would have sent the baffles back and bought the thin ones so I wouldnt have to use any kind of glue. Here are the pics. I didnt have clear sealer so I used white....ghetto yes....but with the side panels on it looks good and sounds better.

This is the pic of the baffle:

I poked a small hole in the back and ran the wire through it. Then glued it:

Here is the finished job:

The above are camera phone pics. Its better then nothing just so people can get the idea of what I did.

Thank you for the praise. Back to jwaggz post now...

My 8's hit low enough and loud enough to keep me happy. That being said, the guy next to me probably won't hear my radio over his, but then again, they are 8's. I prefer sound quality over boom booms.

I was going to go with 1 - 10 to replace the factory sub, but I have always been a fan of the response you can get from a good 8. When the local audio shop (MSE Audio) told me they could retrofit my box for $40, and the box would probably not work well for the Memphis 10, my decision was made.
