Default AVIC-F700BT... yay? nay?

I've never really cared too much about getting an aftermarket head unit or navigation and all that. I've considered a small nav unit, but haven't really had the need for it (ok, with the exception of this weekend's "detour" coming back from VIP ).

So this F700 looks pretty cool. I don't really have a need for the DVD playback in the 900 or 90 since it'll play from SD and USB anyway (avi's anyone?) - though the 900 and 90 do have divx support. Not to mention I would rarely ever be in a position to watch movies in my car.

And of course the huge selling point of this series is the flash memory maps... no discs. And there's already a "bypass" out there for it. Plus I would have great iPod connectivity to it (only have an aux input right now)... so that's a big thing for me. Plus the BT and voice support seem to be top notch... like Ford Sync... except not a crappy Ford/MS device.

The 700s are currently going for about $600 shipped on eBay. Worth it? Should I?

Don't need you guys to make the decision for me... just looking for input one way or another.

go to www.avic411.com and read all the posts about it, especially the trouble forum for it. From all that I've read, it is a huge mess. Just FYI.

I'd do it, I want the MSN software lol and the navigation interface looks sweet. Only reason why I'd get a F90BT is the higher voltage outputs, but other than that the 700 is well worth it!

the firmware release fixed almost all (if not all) the issues, at least from what i've heard.

The MSN Direct is only on the 900 and 90, I think. I looked into that too. Just doesn't seem that useful to me. I'm mostly in for the iPod, BT, and flash maps. Though actual preouts would be nice for my sub.

And ya, I have seen some info on the firmware update. Though I heard MOST of the problems were with the 90... but have seen an update for the 700 as well.

for the price its a great deal

most stand alone navs are about $200

the higher preouts is not a major thing, you can adjust your gains

if I wanted to spend under 1K for a nav set up id go this way

Ya, I'm not worried about the higher preouts either... just a basic set is fine. I don't have a crazy system. Just one 10".

I've heard some people complain about the small screen though... since the only used to be like 6.1" and this is 5.8"? But isn't this screen a higher resolution than the others (D3 in particular I've seen mentioned).

When did you get yours? Was it a really early one? Firmware update or anything done?

it was the second batch.. already updated from the factory.. for me the biggest gripe is that the touch screen isnt always responsive.. i have to press the menu button to get back to the source i want because it always freezes up.. that and it doesnt like my q9c phone

I have a 700 and I'll admit, it was pretty frustrating with the BT before the firmware update. Now that it's all installed and good, it works like a charm, though it doesn't like my Treo 700w too much. And since it runs Windows CE, it takes a while to boot up, but once it's going, the touch screen and response time is well above acceptable, in my opinion. One gripe is no hawt female voice.. :[

But seriously, overall, I think it's a good in-dash navi unit, but no one can deny that it isn't perfect. Personally, I'd recommend trying it and just returning it if you're dissatisfied.

I have the F90BT and I'm starting to think about returning it too. I have the one that is updated also. The load time is way too slow and the the unit itself responds very slowly.

Guess I'll just have to hope for the best and see what happens. Will certainly start a thread on it if something gets fishy (and likely end up spending days on avic411)...

Got notice that my iPod cable shipped today. Waiting on the HU...

i just bought a scion to universal harness and soldered into the harness that comes from the stereo.. make sure you do the bypass.. not to hard at all just make sure you have a tiny sunglass screw driver to move the mute wire
