hmm...converting avi to either DVD or VCDs...

I don't know if my computer, Athlon 1600+ is powerful enough to do it... even if It does, I think it will take forever to convert.

By the way, which one do you guys think is better? Eclipse? Pioneer? or Kenwood? (DVD Only, Don't need Nav.)

it doesnt take a very powerful computer to convert avi to vcd or dvd. I used to convert them with my old dual p2 233. and only took 14 minutes.

I just ordered a new Eclipse AVN5495 DVD w/ Nav and 30gig hard drive. I haven't installed it yet so I can't comment on the unit. I will watch this thread and comment when I get it installed though.

I have the AVN 5495 installed. Its a sweet system. Highly recommend it. But it does not play any formats lile avi, wmv, mpeg, mpg etc. Was actually trying to see if someone has a software installer to update the system's player. My search continues...

I wonder how big the file was that took only 14 minutes to convert. Most of my avi files are 700megs. I think it will take forever to convert 700meg into DVD or VCD...
and I have to figure out how to keep 5.1 channel or DTS..hehe

doesn't even play mpeg or mpg? wow..that means the player most likely doesn't support VCD either...hmm...

Op, If your trying to watch **** in your car, the best way to do it is with a carputer. While your watching **** you can also check your e-mail or play solitare. Happy viewing!

Some of those cheap In-dash dvd players on ebay can play avi files, such as the LM7508 and the LM6508. I bought and sold the LM6508 on ebay and it played every video type I threw at it well. Vob, Mpeg, mpg, avi, m2v. It wasn't the best head unit, but for video playback, it worked well. The only major downfall of the unit was it only played videos on a cd-r or dvd-r/rw, not a dvd+r/rw. I hope this helps.

Do either of those (the LM7508 and LM650 have the capability of being wired into the steering wheel controls of an '06? Also, I can't quite tell from the ebay descriptions: MUST The screen come out in order to use it, or can it just stay flat (verticle) like a regular radio? In other words, whenever I want to use the thing, do I have to have this huge honkin' screen thing hanging out of my dash?

I have a '05 tC so I don't know about using the steering wheel controls for it, but I would guess it wouldn't work. The functionality of the unit as far a video playback is similar to other double din units meaning that the screen slides down (horizontal) only when you insert a dvd/cd. Simply press a button to raise the screen back. You can adjust the angle in many different ways to suit your field of viewing. I recorded a video of the LM6508 in action a while back. I will try to find it and pm a link for you if you want.

my ddx 7017 plays mpeg/mpg. However, it does not support AVI. Which stinks, because avi is such a good file format for size/quality.

One of my friends just got a LM6508. I couldn't find my videos from long ago, but I made a new one of this in action.

Here is a clip that has a divx file being played then the tv tuner being used.
