However, I recieved a reminder why I shouldn't be doing this at 5am, on my lap instead of a hard surface.....

I actually install for a living and I had this problem too. Sooo, I went to the local tool store, bought a $10 pair of cheap bolt cutters (about 18" long I think) then whipped out my die grinder and shaped the blades into 4ga crimpers. Works like a dream with little or no effort at all! And after you crimp it, its tight enough so that my buddy can grab one end and I can grab the other and we can't pull it apart.
But, if you're only doing this one time and not everyday, then a hammer (or rock, lol) is the way to go.

i bought a hammer crimp. it works up to 2gauge usually. some places claim that it'll work with a 0guage, but realistically, 2gauge is the biggest that'll actually work.

this is what it looks like, i got one from phoenix gold for like $30. u can find them for less than $40-sometimes u see them on ebay. def the way to go with crimping unless u're gonna solder stuff. i've used it for audio installs, ground wires, and also doing the big 3 upgrade with 2gauge wire. so much easier than using a friggin hammer. i used to do that, and the terminals would look like crap.

Assuming you're using a decent crimper, flatten it down with a hammer (rock...lol) and then finish the job with the crimper which should now fit much better now that it is flattened. Make sure the wire doesn't slip out while your hammering/rock-ing or else it can be a pain to get the wire back in. If you have access to a vise, I strongly suggest that method followed by crimping.

What I used was a wire crimper/stripper. Usually had red handles. Place the crimp onto the wire then place the crimper onto where it may say "ignition terminals". Place the crimper on the ground with the wire and press down on the crimper while it's on the ground.
