^ Try it, you'll like it! There's really no way to adequately explain the difference, but it only takes a moment of listening and you'll be convinced. After owning one for about 17yrs now, I can't imagine not using one, it's a "must have" for my systems.

I noticed they changed the spelling (case) on the new units, such that the OP's says "EPICENTER" in all caps, while my older model reads "EPICenter".

Because I have no problem getting low-end out of my iPod.
It sounds fantastic just the way it is.... and I know the difference between what sounds crappy and what sounds good.

Is this meant for iPods that are hooked up using the headphone output or something?

What quality mp3 files are you guys using?? I don't understand why your iPod is making music sound crappy...

Don't get hung up on that one aspect mentioned by their marketing department!

Sure it helps in that situation, but it does sooooo much more for a system. Forget the MP3s, it makes a big difference with top-quality production CDs too.

It analyzes the signal and detects second-order harmonics of missing fundamental frequencies. Then it recreates the fundamental from the harmonic, and add it back in so you don't miss any of the low frequencies. The thing is, the level is user adjustable (remote, so you can control it from the dash), so that even when none of the low frequencies are missing, it can add a HUGE amount of low-end bass to the signal going to your amp. There's also a built-in subsonic filter, so your amp isn't wasting power by producing frequencies your sub can't cleanly produce, effectively giving them even more power in the range where they're most efficient.

So even if you only use the best quality source material, your system can still benefit from an EPICENTER, especially if you're a "bass head". In fact, many people considering more subs and more amp power would likely be surprised to find that adding an EPICENTER is all they need, and it's certainly easier and less expensive than upgrading subs & amps. I should also mention that it's capable of generating enough bass to destroy a sub system, so you have to be careful with the dial, you can easily send your subs into distress (over excursion) by turning it too far.

How easy of an install? Does the rca from the HU go to the epicenter, and then epicenter to amp?

Basically it is like an equalizer, goes after the head unit then out to the amps from there. I prefer the DQX my self, I just can't afford it.

Haha, yeah it sure would! However, that one amp for the subs is more than I would ever need.

I have a Memphis amp hidden under the passenger seat running the components.

Yes, it installs like an EQ (just as easy as SNTC described), but it doesn't function like one. You also need to run the remote wire (it's just a regular 4-wire phone cable) to the dash for the small controller, unless you buy the in-dash version (half-DIN size).

I don't think they make an in-dash version of the epicenter.

They may not now, but they did for a while, so a person should be able to locate one if they really want that type. The in-dash unit had a built-in SPL meter too, with the digital display of the dB right on the front of the half-DIN sized unit.

You couldn't be expected to know this, as you were probably like 5-10yrs old when it was in production.

Nice, clean setup. I like this one quite a bit, and it makes my ears tickle with jealousy , even though I just got my own new setup. Those 4 10"s handle it.

True, but only for those who want a double DIN head unit. Switching to a single height unit with a dash kit would enable people to locate the EPIC-160 conveniently under the HU. No matter, as there's no advantage to the in-dash unit over the remote model, other than the dB meter.
