garage 1217 led swap question!!!!....plz help
#22
Hey experts,
I am working on the LED swap, and I have got the fuel, tach, and speedometers swapped. However, some of the lights are not lighting up. The ones are the 2 bottom/middle ones on the speedometer and the two top ones in the fuel section. Is this my flaw? The soldering job looks identical to the other spots. I don;t have any resistors in, could this be the problem? What happens if I don't install the resistors?

You do not need the resistors on the gauges. They will just make them a bit brighter, but due to the way the series led circuits are laid out and the voltage on the cluster, they will be pretty much perfect brightness wise without a resistor swap (this is just for the guages of course, not the HVAC), Out of hundreds of them, I have never had anyone ask me to make the gauges brighter, thus I have never swapped those resistors. And I designed the HVAC mod to make it about the same brightness as the stock gauges with an led swap. So in short, no, not swapping the resistors on the gauges will not cause an issue.
I would say that you most likely either have a bad solder joint or leds in backwards. As mentioned above, the notched corner should point in the direction of the arrow next to the led. It is also possible that if you kept the iron on the led too long that you damaged it.

Thanks for the replies...
I went ahead and switched em out with new LEDs, and they then worked. So either the LEDs were bad or the solder joint was bad. Oh well, either way it worked out and I am happy. However, how do you make the red vinyl more red? I have one layer on some spots (with white LEDs), should I add another layer?
