Does anybody know how to install the translucent vinyl and reverse LCD items on Garage1217 for the gauge cluster?


This is the style I'm going for. I made this in photoshop so I didn't reverse the LCD in this pic.

place vinyl on the back of the gaugeface where needed..
and remove stock lcd filter... install new one.

Ok, so how would you get the white numbers with the rest blue? The garage1217 website doesn't give the dimensions of the transluscent vinyl so I don't know if I can cut a circular piece out.

you can manipulate a small strip cut wide enough to place it on the line area.. stretching and then folding as necessary in areas where it doesn't show thru.

You replace all the back LEDs white. take your vinyl and without a light table, you can hold it up towards the light (where you can see through the paper/vinyl and the gauge face. take you a tool (I used an exacto) and slowly and lightly mark you an outline of where to cut. then you just cut that out and it's just small trimming from there on out. but just for tips, don't touch the black parts on the gauge face. Finger prints dont come off very easily on there.

^^ ehh.. damp paper towel will take those fingerprints off pretty easily... just the oils in your hands.. that's all.

Does anybody know the actual dimensions of the vinyl that garage1217 is selling? Or know of a different source? It would be much much easier to just trace and cut out a circular piece.

a GREAT deal more material... for MUCH, MUCH cheaper.
you'll be lookin' at the 8300 series.

my guess would be that the place you had looked at gives you a small 8"x10" piece... shoot maybe even bigger... but yea.. $6 or so..

spend $6 at the site i gave you.. before shipping.. you get 24"x (uhh yea..)36"
enough vinyl to do ALOT of cars... and enough extra to not even worry about messing up.

I hate to keep shooting out questions but, which blue do you typically use? (assuming you've used this source) They have many different blues, each with there own useless name...I'll go ahead and list out my "things to get" for the gauge mod because I've already come close to making a mistake.

1. Translucent Vinyl from Pacific Coast
2. Reverse LCD from Garage1217
3. 1206 330OHM SMD 1/8 Watt Resistor (x5)
4. 1206 470OHM SMD 1/8 Watt Resister (x1)
5. PLCC-2 SMT Led - White (x14) from Oznium --For gauge faces
6. PLCC-2 SMT Led - Blue (x4) from Oznium -- For LCD and Blinkers
7. Americana Acrylic Paint - White -- For needles
8. Clear Acrylic Nail Polish -- For needles

(and of course all the soldering tools, etc)

The vinyl I sell and stock is 6x12", plenty to do 2 sets of gauges which is what I can get out of each sheet when I perform swaps in house.

The colors I sell are as close as a match to the actual LED colors as I could find.

Question regarding the vinyl:

I put red on there but it isn't nearly as red as the stock red (at the high end of the tach). Does anyone have any idea how to make it more red? It is kinda pinkish

I have white LEDs and the red covers the "MPH" portion. I am thinking I might put another vinyl on top of the one I put there. Any other ideas?

I will do that later today.

Ok, so I'm sitting here with my lcd unsoldered. How do you replace the stock filter with the reverse one? Are you supposed to peal something or whats the deal?

There is a nice write up on here somplace, you have to remove the stock film by peeling up an edge witha razor blade. Then take it off carefully without breaking the screen. Then remove the old adhesive by useing goo-gone & scraping with a blade. Then you have to apply the film in such a way that the screen looks black. Here are some example pics...

I ended up just going for it, thanks for the help though. Now I have to figure out why the AC, Recirc, and Outside temp buttons won't light but everything else does...

Check the direction of the LED's. Make sure the notch on the corner of the LED is on the end that the arrow is pointing to.

It turned out to be a bad solder. I also switched out the wrong resistor and had to fix that as well. It's all working right now though.
