Default Has anyone put a secret compartment or safe in the trunk???

Ok I know this is a very odd question, but I am getting ready to go off to college soon and I was thinking it would be a cool idea to put some type of secret compartment in the trunk. I know I could just use the flaps where the spare tire is, but I was thinking something that could have a hidden release or maybe some type of combination to open it. Anybody attempted something like this?

I've only put oil slicks and smoke screens in my car, working on the front end missle launcher currently. Let me know how this turns out.

thats not a bad idea for something like your laptop or other valuables (I'm in college too). It wouldn't be too hard to make a locking box similar to Elemental design's hidden sub box, but use it for storage instead.

Alarms just make noise. If anything they just motivate a thief to do the job faster. Now if you were to include a safe box somewhere with an alarm thats even better.

I suppose a safe isnt a bad idea. You could have one custom made. Pull out the spare tire and all that junk. Then find a shop that will make a box to fit that size. Put a nice locking device on it (simple pad lock might not work though haha) and your good to go.

hahah, 420's commin up...better get that box done quick! the thing to do is just to modify that open hatch so that you could lock it, if you do this then definitely make a DIY i'd love to see something like that done...very unique

I was looking at something like this. I wanted to make a box inderneath the back seats that could be accessed from the rear seat footwell area.

i'm pretty sure that having "secret compartments" in cars are illegal

yeah...here it is for Georgia, I'm too lazy to look for other states.

‘False or secret compartment’ means any enclosure which is integrated into or attached to a vehicle and the purpose of the compartment is to conceal, hide, or prevent discovery by law enforcement officers of:

From how i understand it, as long as your not trying to hide drugs or something, it is ok. I mean, i can't see why locking your laptop in a hidden safe in your car is bad. As long as your not trying to hide it from law enforcement officers, what is the problem?

I would be putting my 360 in it as a place to put it and for it to be locked. Also I will be welding it to the frame so it couldn't be opened.

or, you could put that little safe in there, fill it with junk. so when the theif breaks into your car, and the alarm goes off, they figure the best stuff to steal is in that little safe, so they take it and run off, but later when they open it, they have nothing.

or better yet: PUT A TRANSMITTER IN THE SAFE AND FIND THE BASTARD YOURSELF AND BEAT HIM TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW!

It would suck if you got an Xbox 360 and PS3 inside that thing all wired up and then you get into a bad accident. I dunno maybe someone rams your butt at 60 mph (they're drunk) and now you cant get that stuff out of your car.

yeah, but

"(c)(1) It is unlawful for any person to knowingly own or operate any vehicle containing a false or secret compartment.
(2) It is unlawful for any person to knowingly install, create, build, or fabricate in any vehicle a false or secret compartment"

makes me believe that just having one can get you in trouble... I guess the grey area is that if you don't have anything illegal in it at the time, you could probably fight it.

I'd just focus more on getting the alarm system in Robocop (I think), where it straps the thief down and electrocutes them. Yeah...

I'm gonna weld it to the fram so it would be impossible for someone to break off the box and run off with it without a cutting torch.

ok, um..why go through all that trouble just to transport your game console in the trunk?

and throwing a safe in a trunk...must be me..but practically speaking this is a terrible idea. nothing draws more attention than messing around with an open car.
your best bet is to make a compartment under a new false floor in the center armrest, or a lockbox under the driver or passenger seats.
getting out of your car to stash/grab your valuables is a ridiculous idea.
