HUGE Build thread: eD, alpine, DLS, etc...
well guys i thought i'd let u all know i'm starting my new build. Its going to be a pretty big undertaking for me and should be pretty bad ***. lets start with the system diagram.
now lets get to the components:
alpine dva-7996 *purchased in hands*
alpine c-701 *purchased in hands*
alpine h-701 *purchased in hands*
SAVV 10.2" monitor *purchased in hands*
elemental designs nine.1 *owned from previous install*
elemental designs nine.1 *need to purchase*
elemental designs nine.2x *need to purchase*
elemental designs 13av.2 *pre-order*
elemental designs 13av.2 *pre-order*
DLS Iridium 8.3i's *need to purchase - need to rob a bank*
optima yellowtop *owned from previous install*
(2) kinetic hc1800's *need to purchase*
i plan on doing two runs of power wire as well as mounting the two batteries in the trunk. The 13av.2's will be ported (you will see soon) and the rear seat will be removed. I'm anticipating this install taking 2-3 months as it will compete with my social life (girlfriend), school and my new job. i'm just putting this up as to really to answer a lot of questions i've been getting as well as remind me daily that i need to get this going. I'm going to start on the dash which will be a fun time as i want to put the two headunits as well as the monitor in the dash. I will keep you all updated as i make progress
1-1-08
well lets start with an update, i got the two units in and the sound is amazing. i have the monitor ordered and the next step is going to be to center the headunits better and then start glassing the dash once the mount for the monitor comes in. not much to show here other than the two units together
1-2-08
Well got the monitor in today and wow its gigantic. i'm going to have to rethink how to do this its going to present some issues but i think i know what i'm going to do. here are the pics
here are the two headunits side by side
here is the h701
here is the monitor still in the box. very very nice
here is the dilema... its almost wider than the whole unit so i dunno what to do yet but i think i have an idea. I'm going to start cutting here in about 15 min and figure it all out
ok so i modified the stock bracket for the two units to sit out and up a bit so they weren't on the bottom of the bracket here is where i decided to locate it
then i am going to fiberglass a double din trim plate to the location of the two units. so i needed to cut some space so i would have some place to glass
and here it is
next step is tofinish mounting the 7996 and then glass in the trim panel. should be the end of the day. after i get the area glassed roughly i'm going to draw my attention to the monitor. it will fit its just a matter of positioning right but i think i'll be able to do it.
well here is the next step i put both the units in and then i taped in the trim panel and then am going to start glassing here it is.
both units in the stock location slightly raised up and out (much easier to see and use)
Trim panel taped in.
glassing begins now.
initial glassing is done. i'm pretty happy with it fitment seems really good on the test fit. its getting dark and a old friend is coming into town so i'm probably done for the day. tomorrow is going to deal with the monitor
payoff
UPDATE: 1-3-08
well after alex called me i was quite motivated and decided to get up pretty early and figure out how the **** this monitor is gonna work so this is what i came up with.
monitor mount laid in to figure out where to cut
lines drawn
cutting
and finally i think the monitor is going to sit like this
god **** i'm white. i need to make sure this is where i want it but i think this is where its going to sit
well after the morning i got the bottom glassed in. i had to trim the top panel quite a bit but its really turning out. i'm going to pay attention to the top and sides this afternoon and then sanding will begin
after initial glassing
after a heafty sand job to even it all out
well last little update for the day.
i got the top part done. i'm going to just add another layer of fiberglass tonight and sand some maybe tomorrow but i'm heading over to eD so i wanted to show them all. here are the pics from this afternoon
1-7-08
well after a weekend off spending time with the woman and some of the guys at eD i got to some sanding today. Not much to show, i went to napa and they were out of duraglass so i have to wait till tomorrow to get some so not much will be done today but you can see the progress, its much more smooth.
1-8-08
threw on a thin coat of primer and then really wanted to figure out where i had spots. the duraglass came in today and i put the first coat on. its really starting to smooth out nicely and after a couple sand / fillers i should be able to do more primer and start some rage finishing. oh well here are pics from yesterday and today
more sanding
well i got another coat of primer on it. really starting to come together
still needs a lot of work but its def coming
1-10-08
more sanding and more primering done its really come a long way but sadly theres a lot to go still
fairly big update today
1-20-08
worked on it for 3 hours before football and this is what came out of it
theres about 3 spots on the trim pannel and then of course the front of the monitor which you can see in the one pic that needs some work. its time to switch over to body filler now.

first off, mad props on the skill!
just to throw another idea at you (because i too think the screen would get annoying) put the screen where the stock stereo goes, but the 2 HUs where the HVAC goes and move the HVAC to the arm rest or the glove box. maybe then you could retain the air vents too. (this is a daily driver, right?)

i too was wondering why the old processor when alpine has their new imprint decks, why no center channel...
besides that looking good on the glass work.... personally i would have used some duraglass or something of that nature... fiberglass and plastic tend to separate from one another after time...
