Default Illumination Wire...

Due to lack of experience and free time, I had Best Buy install my D3. Long story short, I notice the unit doesn't dim when the headlights turn on. I call up Best Buy and they inform me that they don't hook up illumination wires. Period. sigh

So I'm going to do it myself. While I've never done anything like this my dad has offered to help (He's installed a few stereos back in the day). My question for you guys is...how do I go about figuring out which the illumination wire is? I've used the search function, and while there are many posts on this topic they aren't as clear as I'd hope. I guess what I'm really after are pictures of the illumination wire so I can be sure we get the right one . Thanks in advance all.

tap into to any 12volt source that turns on when the headlights are on...such as the cubby light. thats what I did - just tap into the positive wire

It's the orange colored one coming from the after-market wire harness that they should have installed.

You could have them correct their poor install habits for free.

why do it yourself when they didnt install it properly? bring it back and have them install it the right way or else... you paid for the installation at least have them fix it the right way.

part of the reason I'm planning on just doing it myself is because I want to do the by pass too. Not being able to alter a route w/o being parked is rather lame.

thanks for the responses so far

I thought you couldn't do the bypass on the D3 because it knows from the GPS that the car's moving, and therefore won't allow you to change/view moving pictures/images???

there's always a way to get around it..

doesn't make it any more legal though.

Right...in previous models, you could easily bypass the safety features...but I thought in the later models (due to law suits), Pioneer's figured out a way to tell if the car's stopped with the GPS (not moving), AND with the parking brake engaged.

You still must have the reverse wire, and speed sensor wire connected...

All I'm suggesting is that he shouldn't be surprised if he tries bypassing the emergency brake through traditional methods and the unit won't allow him to view moving images and/or change navigation settings while the car's moving...

I could be wrong though...but I recall some installer friends telling me something along these lines...

Edit: Never mind...I found the answer.
