Default Installing PS2 - Electrical Guru Needed

I am trying to hook up a slim ps2 to my avic-d2. In order to power it, which would be the preferred method and why?

Method 1:
Purchase one of these:

and plug it into one of these, and attach the wire ends to the ground and battery.

Method 2:
Get a power inverter and just use that:

If I was doing the same install in the shop here I would not use the a/c converter. UNLESS you want the PS2 to be removable. With it you are able to just unplug it and take it inside. One of the bad things is location if the install because of having to use the a/c cord that comes with the ps2 and unless you want to splice into it or use a ghetto extension cord you will be limited by how long it is in some cases.

I personally dont like using a/c inverters in installs unless absolutly necessary. Hardwiring it will work great and allow you to hide everything without being limited on wire legth at all. Plus you wont have to worry about where to mount the inverter, which isnt a big deal but still something else to do.

Is the first option safe? I know that the vehicle uses a large amount of power when you start the engine, I just don't want to fry anything if I use the first method for connection. I know those AC inverters have a shutdown/overload protection so nothing will blow up on me. Could you comment on that?

The first option you posted is a specific adapter for the PS2, to adapt 12v to the ps2 correct? If so then yes its fine. Its basically the same thing as the inverter. Stand-alone power inverters are also bad about making electrical noise. So if you have amplifiers, take that into consideration, depending on the product and install you could get noise from it.

When you install the cigarette adapter just make sure to fuse it with a 15 amp fuse or so. Then if for some reason something does happen your fuse just blows. Thats an easy fix for that, but if that adapter is ps2 specific then there should be no issues.

That adapter is ps2 specific. Thanks for your help. One last question. Will I need to wire a switch in line? Or should I be okay with just adding a fuse so that when the car is started nothing blows?

You can add a switch if you like, or you can wire the +12v side of the cigarette adapter to a circuit in the car that is an accessory circuit, meaning that the PS2 will recieve power when the car is running, but it will not recieve power during engine cranking.

If testing out an accessory circuit is something your not comfortable with, then a switch might be the easiest to do. Just use the 4 gauge white wire as a power source. This wire is located behind the pop-out door where your fuse access is. Its up and to the right a bit. Like I said, just make sure to fuse it.

i use ur first option, works great and more simple plug and play. much more safer than rewiring or ground inverter. plus i dont think the ground inverters will run at 8.5 volts.

I would do method 1, and cut the lighter plug off, and splice it directly into your fuse box. No bulky adapters. That's what I do with radar detectors.

^ps2 slims need a 8.5 volt source. so u cant simply just splice away at a 12 volt source.

I'm guessing the big black flat plastic piece in the picture steps down the voltage. the lighter is 12 volts, so the ps2 car adapter has to be a 12 volt adapter. I was saying cut the end off the car adapter and splice into a power wire at the fuse box so you don't have a wire cluttering up the dash area.

Okay, I ordered the parts for method 1. As far as the accessory circuit goes, would an example be the power that runs to the cigarette plug in the car? If not, what is an example of an accessory circuit so I may connect it to that one.

Cigarette plug is one, thats the one i'm tapping for my Ps2.
I didn't really read much but the first four and last posts, but I'm guessing you're putting the ps2 slim in your glovebox? Easiest location IMO. Adapter works fine tested it for a week in a car with a compatible HU.

Hey troy. I have since installed my ps2 without using a power inverter. In the past, people have experienced noise interference in the speakers from the inverter. I used method number 1, and it worked like a charm with no hassle.
