LED/Cathode install in a tC?
#21
This is awesome.
I have a volt meter, and I can detect the right fuse if I hafta. I just hafta order all the stuff so I can do this install.
There is alot of great info. Its insane.
I was gonna buy the kit from randode, but after you explaining it all, I can definately do it now on my own.
Thanks soo much. All this is a great help and you have no idea how much I appreciate it.
I think I am gonna go with a green lighting...lol

Great write up. I planned to wire my LEDs and cathodes to some accessory fuse (thats no problem) - I have a two way rocker switch (stock scion switch from ozinium.com) the plan was: one way would turn lights on whenever I want... wired to an always on accessory fuse. The middle is 'off' - for when I want to make sure they dont turn on at all. And the third is SUPPOSED to be automatic from the dome light. In other cars I've had there is actually a 'dome light' fuse in the panel - but not on good ole Scion tC. Anyone got any ideas how to wire this? I want the blues to turn on whenever the dome lights are on.
A few questions: what gauge wire do you recommend - you said 16 gauge - but the wires on the cathodes are probably only 22 gauge or something like that. Also - what size fuse did you slap in-line, and whats the right way to calculate it?

I put in my lights. They look aweseome. FYI - For the cup holders I used a 5/16th" drill bit- which is a tad tight - but if you loosen up the drill a little to skim away a TINY bit on the edges you'll be golden - I'd rather do that than go up a size.
Still need some help on getting this thing live with the dome lights -cuz its cheesy being on a switch.

I used 16 gauge only because it was cheap and available. you can use smaller
to determine the fuse size you neeed, consider that 1 cathode kit (2 tubes) uses .7 amps. each LED uses about 10 milliamps. I use a 5 amp fuse on all my stuff

interior LED and Cathode lights, cupholder, switch, pics
Here is my new cupholder LED. I know ppl were interested in the proper position - this is the position for dealer installed LEDs - but I did this myself. When you buy the LED - buy the 'mount' - which is tiny two piece plastic thing that lets you mount it flush and cleanly. (wont hold on its own - cover the back with electric tape).
Bought the OEM switch from ozonium.com, for $7 - definitly worth it. Got the two way switch. If anyone is intersted how to wire this switch to make your interior lights go on with the dome as well as whenever you want - let me know.
Where to mount the passenger cathode. I dont know why ppl have problems with this. Mine is out of sight - you cant see it unless you put your head under the dash. There is a big black plastic panel that is under the passenger side dash - it comes right out to work with it. Its got two holes already in it. I put zip ties thru the holes and pulled tight- and then another set of zip ties thru the first zipties (to make them go the right direction. And thats it!
I'm a new Scion tC owner with a sharp digital camera and alot of free time - so I'll be posting lots of pics and answers if I know them - keep me in mind.

dome light door switch LED Cathode lighting
I like my lights cuz they are better than the dealer option. Put them in the door side pockets (we know that it is screaming for lights on the inside of the doors - if nothing else, for safety) and the rear cupholders. The best part - the dealer setup has to be switched on. I wired mine to go on either switched OR with the dome light. Its easy to do - and definitly worth it - otherwise you are some chump trying to show off by flipping on his lights to impress people. (just impress them automatically).
The way to do it - pop off the door sill trim, and the back seat side panel. See the button on the outside of your door sill - the one that tells that the door is open. Well dont bother trying to unscrew it (with the star shaped screwdriver it would require) - look behind it when you have the panel removed - there is ONE wire clipped into it. Strip back some insulation and tie the wire coming from your lights (that should go to the ground) around it. When the door is open your ground wire meets the ground. You'll have to do the same thing on each door if you want consistency opening the doors. I'm a gentleman and always open my passenger door for my girlfriend - so I'd like her to be greeted with my lights as well.

it took me about 6 hours to do but it was my first time doing anything electrical.......but i frekin did it....even though i didnt hook up the on and off switch cuz i honestly couldnt figure out how to do it.....but instead since i did my boot conversion and i have no use for the little bulb that use to light up my gears i used the wires that powered that bulb to power my two cathodes.....the cathodes arelit every time i turn my interior lights on and they go off as long as i turn off my lights which i never forget to do so i have no fear of the cathodes stayin on once i leave the car......my only concern is that the power that used to power the small bulb is sufficient to power the cathodes.......so far so good....i got my fingers crossed......but im very content with my attempt......ohh i also found a small opening where i was able to run a wire from inside the car to the engine bay.....dont ask me how cuz i dunno but i left the wire there for future reference it might come in handy one day when i need to run a wire directly to the battery....

i currently have the factory illumination kit, is it possible to replace all the tubes and leds from the factory into cathode leds and cathode tubes and not rip out all the factory stuff (cutting of factory leds and putting cathode leds in place)

i dont know....
i have 2 transformers for that very reason. Pretty much each footwell has a transformer (4 total). I dont have to worry about how long the wires are because the transformers can be put where i need them.
sorry i cant hlep you
