Default Mileage is stored in the gauges???

Ok, so here is the story. My buddy is selling his tC because he bought a g35 coupe. He had done an LED gauge swap and I offered to swap gauges with him because I wanted his blue gauges and he wanted his car back to stock to sell. Win win situation or so I thought. So we swapped the gauges and when I turned on my car I had his mileage. "NO way" I said to myself. SO I turned the car off and on again a few times... still had his mileage. "Must be i need to reset the ECU". So I unplugged the battery for 15 minutes, plugged it back in, and guess what... still had his mileage? How is this possible? There must be a way to clear it right? I mean if it was that simple and I didn't care, I could have left my gauges in his car and his car would have had 20k less miles on it. Can someone shed some light on this? Cause this just boggles my mind

Yep, stored in the gauges. Just like before they had digital odometers :D

When you buy a new set of gauges, the dealer has to send them off for programming. that is why those of us that do led swaps dont offer core swaps on the gauges.

it has to also be stores in the pcm too. i dont see them leaving mileage fraud this vulnerable.

It is just as vulnerable in the ECU as well. Trust me, it is stored in the gauges. After doing countless led swaps, and some driving their cars for days without gauges, I can account for this. Not to mention, I originally checkd back in 05 on a way I could get a deal on the gauges through a dealership in order to do core swaps. That is how I found out for sure how it all works and that they have to send them to toyota for programming of the mileage.

It is possible that it is in the ECU somewhere, but it will not update the memory in the gauges.

You have to remember, ALL cars have always been this way. Mechanical gauges store the mileage in the gauges, and as far as I know, most or all of the digital ones do as well.

thats not sad thats a good thing

what if you went to buy a car and the guy had traded out the gauges?

Lets say the car had 120k and the odo said 40k

Its a good thing

??? That is exactly the case... you can swap out the gauges and show whatever mileage is in the new gauges...

So it would be good if the guy screwed you and sold you a car with more mileage than is on the cluster? I dont normally consider paying too much for something and never knowing it a good thing

I mean, it has always been the case the mileage was stored in the gauge cluster, and plenty have been ripped off because of d!cks who swap out the cluster without telling the buyer.. that is just a-hole humans

Yeah, I guess that makes sense... but it still doesn't make sense. But that is how it goes I guess. Thanks for the info! Much appreciated

understood, but my argument is that when u go to trade your car in the dealership might plug something into the ecu to determine the true mileage. you never know.

we would have to find out what the procedure is.

cause this would be cool for those ppl on a lease..*wink
