New Speedometer Questions

New Speedometer Questions
I messed up my gauge cluster while DIY LED Swap. Now I'm in the market for a new one but I have a few questions.
1.) Is it basically a plug & play device -- I can unplug my old one and plug in my new speedometer with no issues?
2.) Do both speedometers have to be at the exact same mileage, or will the new one display the correct mileage upon installation?
3.) How can I get the new one to move the needles across the range of the gauge upon startup? (Mine used to until I started messing around with it.)
4.) What year range will work for a 2009 tC? Can I get the cluster for an 08+??
5.) Any other tips / suggestions other than not to F*** up the new one as well.
I do know that since I have a MT, I need one for MT.
Thank you for any advice.

Legally I don't think you're supposed to swap (because of mileage). There are things you can do to set it straight as far as the title goes, but you're better off getting a new one and going to the dealer to see if they can reprogram it with your current mileage.

Uh, ya. Don't DIY if you have no idea what you're doing?

As far as legality goes, I'm sure that if I swap them when they are at the exact same mile, it would be fine because I'm not changing the displayed mileage on the car.
I guess that one of my questions was answered. Any others?

I can do repair, so you can come to my location, or you can send them out to me for repair...

hmm.. exactly how did you miss it up?
it is probably better to try to salvage the "broken" one than trying to deal with the hassles of getting a new one.
oh, and allen, ack, the dealership can't reprogram the miles in the cluster.

To replace a cluster (through a dealer) they have to send the mileage and VIN info to Toyota, who programs the cluster and then sends it to the dealer. Otherwise, you are supposed to put a sticker on it that says the mileage is off. Recording your mileage and keeping it in the car does absolutely no good. If you sell the car, it is worth the same as one with unknown mileage. I know, I went through all of this when I started doing the led mods back in 05. I was trying to work out a core swap setup for the gauges with a dealership nearby. Turned out to not be worth it or even feasible in most cases.
Let me know what is wrong with yours. I may be able to fix it. I have fixed some pretty hacked up ones in the past!

i have yet to see a dealership reprogram a cluster..
as engifineer said, the most they can do is to order a new one pre-programmed from denso. i've seen the order form and the paperwork necessary. it's not the most fun thing in the world to deal with.
