Default Question about my issues with HVAC LED mod??

I have recently swapped my led's on my gauges and HVAC. The gauges came out perfectly, but the HVAC did not. Every light works except the mode, defrost front, defrost back. When I press the buttons the two LED's to the side light up fine.

I am stumped. I have already swapped the LED's to new ones and that didn't fix the issue.

Thanks for any help!!

I cant see the pic at work. Did you use the new mod or the old one? If the new one, did you replace all of the resistors with the new, proper values.

If the old mod (with jumpers on the board) did you ensure you cut the trace on that side of the board? and also that you added all of the jumpers to the negative (cathode) side of the leds? These are items that sometimes get forgotten or put in the wrong place.

Let me know and I can try to help you troubleshoot.

If you want to send some closeups of the board to my email, shoot me a pm and I will give you my email adress. I can probably figure it out that way as well. Or I can look at the pics you post here later this evening.

the three together on the right like that are in series..

if one doesn't work... none of them will. check connections and the leds.

Default LED

I actually removed the three LED's I had on the board, and replaced them with brand new ones. I also checked over all the connections and everything looks good to me.

Did you do the new or old mod? I changed the write ups late last year.

Oh and on a side note squall... I had a less frequent type of failure recently on steering wheel controls. An led actually failed to light but still conducted. This can happen, but is much more rare. and it usually happens after the LED has aged a long time, it iwll stop producing light. So the middle led stopped lighting but the other two worked fine Swapped the led and all was good.

hmmm... definitely a rare incident indeed. maybe the led shorted, but because (thinking) that the 2K resistor was still there, it didn't overload the other two?

*shrugs*

i dunno... but in my experience with the radio controls, the middle led always seems to fail first...

They can actually conduct just the same, only not emitting photons. Not near as common as one dying all together though. This one lasted about 3 weeks tops before dying.

I would bet one is dead. I had one overheated from a customer the other day and it was simply.... dead. Knocked out that side of the board. Found the dead one, tossed in a new and all was swell in led land!

Got his pictures and have given him some things to try. It sounds like the leds have already been re-swapped, so maybe not a bad led. But possibly a damaged SMT resistor or a pad pulled off the board while desoldering. This is the new mod, so no worry about jumpers.

Not sure if you check here or your email more often Z, but you have info I sent last night. Let me know how it goes. I am on the Live mail beta, so my email has been a little flakey, so let me know if you missed my message.

If all else fails I will take a look at it for the cost of return shipping back to you. Unless it takes something expensive (which I seriously doubt here), I will take care of it for just the shipping charges. It is most likely something simple.

Default Where to get a 43 ohm resistor locally??

I live in Charlotte, NC, and I was wondering where I could just get one 43 ohm resistor locally?? I just want to make a quick swap to see if this will fix my issue.

Also, thanks for everyone's input on this issue I am experiencing with my HVAC.

Do you think I can get a 43 ohm resistor at Radio Shack??

Not a surface mount. Shoot me your mailing addy and I can send one out to you. I get them by the hundreds (Actually 1000 at a time last time I ordered ) Granted, this is not a quick solution since you have to wait for mail time, but finding a store with surface mount resistor like that will be nearly impossible in most places. And if you order it through digikey, you will pay a $5 charge for orders under $25 and shipping

A quick check is the one I mentioned in the email. Plug the board in, touch a wire to one side of the resistor, and scrape the wire over the other side of the resistor quickly. If the leds blink, you know it is either the resistor or the connection to it. A quick tap like that wont hurt the leds. Just dont leave the jumper connected for any length of time.

In any case, let me know if you want me to send you out the resistor and I will get it out to you tomorrow.

You could possibly find an axial lead 43 ohm resistor there.. but you will have to bend it and make it fit. I did my board the first time, when I was designing the mod, that way, but it isnt the best way to go about it. Not a durable.
