I had the Whistler 1783 but it recently shut off fon me cause of the extreme heat, now everytime i switch fuses and it would pop on me! though i was satisfied with the radar but it was slowly dieing on me; distorted sound, increased false, and alerts would freeze...... the heat can really mess up your radar so keep it away from sunlight everytime your not driving!!!!

i previously owned a Rocky Mountain Radar and that thing was terrible! the alert distance was short and several false alerts! never buy RMR products (or cobras)!!

investing in a radar detector depends on where you live and what kind of environment your surronded by.... since i live in a city with street lights, forest, sharp turns/curves and streets; buying an expensive radar (escort,V1,BEL) is pointless. the benefits i will actually get is reduced false alerts and distance would not matter....

so im planning on grabbing a PNI Sensoro Traveller 2, according radarbusters.com, PNI performs just as good as escorts and bel but just slightly weaker with false alerts assuming itll perform better then my whistler 1783 overall. FALSE ALERTS ARE IMPORTANT!!!

if your on a budget and you want something under $150, look forward to PNI, Whistler, and Beltronics (even BEL's older models perform very well!)

if money aint a problem, grab an ESCORT, VALENTINE 1 or BELTRONICS!

Radar and Laser jammers do not work! radarbusters.com is paying $1500 to anyone who can prove these work

opinions are opinions. some think v1's better, some think passport's better. if i were you i'd do some actual research starting with www.radarbusters.com ......trust the actual facts.

Like I said earlier, they are all good radar detectors. The RX-65, 8500 X50, the V1, the STI, all of them will be great for whoever buys them. You will not be dissapointed with which ever one you get. They will all false alert, some more than others. They will all give you enough time to slow down (if you are speeding) they will all perform very well. You can search and choose for yourself. I like the RX-65 because I hardly ever get false alerts the audio is very nice, the distance on the highway is great. I have a friend who has the V1 the arrows are really nice, cause you don't have to look all around trying to find the source it's right there for you.

By the way to HAVOKtC how do you like your sr-7? All I know is it's not a window radar detector and that it cose about twice as much as ours.
So tell us a little bit about it.

I am thinking about getting a Passport x50. I want to have a nice clean look and was thinking about keeping it off the windshield and rather put it right above and on top of the center vents. The radar would still have a clear view in front of it.

That's all the Passport needs right?... a clear view ahead of it?

Pretty much. Make sure it's in the center, not blocked by the windshield wipers or anything, and level. Making sure it's level is a big one. Don't have it pointed up or down just level.

personally i love it. the false alerts are minimal. it has a good distance to it. i drive highway and and some city but mostly if i get into a big city like chicago i turn it off. i got it second hand so it was fairly cheap but lacking the two leds that you can install in your cluster. that last part i don't really care for anyways.
the thing i like about it most is that most people don't know i have one so they don't tail me. i had that problem when i had my v1.

i got mine for cheap otherwise i probably would still have a v1.

i got rid of the v1 because i got this one and i liked it better, asthetically (sp?). the only function i liked on the v1 more was the arrows, but i got over that.

While we are on topic - does everybody's V1 scream Laser at Chevy TrailBlazer LED 3rd brake light? You have to be 3-5ft behind it to make it scream, though - so the only time I get it is when I'm at a stop sign behind one of those monsters. Also happened with some other GM SUV - don't remember which one.

i perfer the sr-7. its pretty on par with the v1 in terms of telling you how many signals its getting and the strength. and the false alerts are to a minimum.but like i said the arrows for me was the only difference.

No, "laser" warning went off. Looks like it's a known issue for certain GM SUVs.

Bel RX-65 (not hardwired. Saving my pennies for a really high tech top o the line system). Got it NIB on ebay for about 1/2 price. Reason why the Bel RX-65 over the v1?

POP Radar. Though I have NEVER run into this, apparently the newest line of v1's will not allow you to turn this feature off. This reason and this reason only is the single one i did NOT choose a v1. Although I've run a lot of good and bad detectors in my 9+ years on the road, i've found the v1 and the Bel RX-65 to be my two favorties hands down.

Next investment will be for a supa-stealth radar detection system/laster jammer system. ;)
