Default Sub Box Question

So I have a new sub and box, its a 12in. sub and is measured for 1 cu. ft. I got a free box from a buddy but it is at 1.7 cf. Is there any padding or anything I can add to reduce it to more of a 1 cf. feel? Also, the box is about 16in tall at the highest point but I want the trunk cover to fit over and the box is about 2 inches too tall, what can I do here? I appreciate the help guys...

What kind of sub is it?
Is the box ported or sealed?

build a new box that fits your designated area and is closer to the sub's q spec.

or buy one.

unless its a monster sub, 1.7 is probably too big and won't be able to handle as much power as it would in a smaller (1 cu ft.) box.

its not hard to build a 14x14x14 box. and that WILL fit under the hatch cover. i know because my box is 14x14x36...i designed it to fit perfectly under the cover.

you can even go to home depot or something and have them cut you a whole bunch of 14x square 3/4 mdf cutouts, then all you need to do is make a circle cutout for the sub, and nail/glue it together and cover it and you're done.

Well, I am waiting a few months to get a custom box, so my questions are pertaining to right now I guess. I am trying to avoid spending more money... The sub powers 1500 wats peak and 500 rms, so it is a niceley powered sub. Any other thoughts? I do appreciate all the input so far.

Well, to get closer to the 1cu ft mark, secure some pieces of MDF or any material that equals out to .7 cu ft to the inside of the enclosure to reduce the volume...

^^^ actually a good idea, except the box is already together, and he only has a 12" cirlce cut out to fit these "filler" pieces into. so it would be a real piece meal job.

and FYI OP- poly fill gives the affect of making the box bigger, so that wouldn't help.

a 12"circle cutout is plenty big enough to fit some 2x4 pieces or whatever along with a screwgun into....

Seriously, just buy or make a new box. Also, check with your locl audio shop and see if they will sell you/ tell you where you can get a baffle. Trace out the inside onto your new bos and jigsaw it out vary carefuly and very slowly if you want it to look nice.

Well I am going to, I'm just talking about a month or two here, Im in college and broke, so I have to save money to buy the custom box... On that note, what will the effect be on the sub of having a box that is too big? Also, back to my other question, is there any way to make the trunk cover fit over?

That's why I suggested filling the internal volume with some solid material.... it's temporary...

Having a sealed box that is bigger than recommended will increase the low frequency extension but the power handling will decrease....

x2.

to fit you enclosure under the hatch cover, make its height no more than 14". my 14 14 36 box fits perfectly under the cover.

next weekend i get to start building my first box. Building it to house 2 JL Audio 10W6v2's in 2 separate chambers. The enclosure will be sealed.

overall dimensions on the exterior are going to be:
29.75" wide
12" tall
10.5" deep

each box will have airspace equal to-
13" wide
10.5" tall
9" deep
or .71 cubic feet. With a driver displacement of .068 cubic feet, that'll give each sub 0.6429375 cubic feet of airspace. Spec calls for .6250, so this isn't that bad at all!

ended up making a cut board for all the pieces. There's 1/16" gap between panels to allow for the width of the saw blade.

jasper jigs are a godsend. I ordered both from partsexpress for like 40 bucks!

i'm also going to make a new hatch floor piece out of mdf. the stock hatch floor is made out of cardboard, and isnt going to hold the weight. I'm just going to use the stock floor piece as a template. After cutting out the floor, i'm going to cut a rectangle out of it and router the edges and lay a piece of clear plexiglass into it. etch the scion logo onto the plexi and light up the amps/logo with cathodes. should be fun!

^^ Nice outlay. You even remembered to account for the thickness of the MDF you plan to use. Lookin good. You should keep us posted on how the build goes.

And whats a jasper jig? Im old school and will be building my first new box in over 10 years. If it makes it easier Im all for it.

^^^ any particular reason you're going with a dual chambered sealed box over a common chamber?

One thing I can definitely say - don't draw out all the cuts before time to cut... measure and take each piece one by one...

also, I may be confused but I think you need (2) 29.75x12 for face and rear and (2) 29.75x9 pieces for the top and bottom

A jasper jig is a jig that you attach to a router to make perfect circle cuts
