Default Sub Enclosure Sealant Alternative and Multi Amp Remote Bass

Two questions...

What is the best alternative to silicone for sealing an MDF enclosure? I have read that silicone releases a acidic fume that could possibly harm the surround of the sub unless you let the enclosure cure for several days before installing the subs. I would like something that will allow me to use the enclosure as soon as the seal has dried.

Im adding a second Polk C500.1 amp tomorrow. I already have the remote bass control of the the first one in place. The remote is connected by a phone type cord and connects to the amp with a phone style plug. I think its 4 wires but not sure if it uses all. Anyway can I just pigtail off the existing wire and then plug into the second amp so both amps are controlled by the one remote?

Well, I read that you just have to wait 24 hours for the gases of the silicone to exit. That is about how long you have to wait for the silicone to dry, so I just sealed it and stuck it in another room for a day.

As for the remote..it is USUALLY just a CAT-5 cable (computer ethernet cable). I do not know about the piggy backing... I would think that each should have it's own because it may cause clipping in one while the other is fine. It could even be electrically bad to use the same remote control.

I'm sure I'm probably wrong, so someone step in and correct me!

Some wood builders say that as long as you use and epoxy based glue (like Gorilla Glue) it expands enough that you don't have to seal a sub box other than around where the sub is. If you go that route, you can buy a caulk ring to seal the sub with.

You can run a healthy bead of wood glue on all the seams, or use a thick coat of latex paint. Either will be adequately dry in just a couple hours, and at that point won't off-gas anything that'd damage the adhesives holding the sub together.

And you heard right about silicone, it's great stuff, but the fumes can cause a speaker to come apart in short order. How much a person should be concerned also depends on what type of caulk is used, as the cheap white silicone caulk intended for tubs & tile produces a lot less bad gas for less time than something like clear GE Silicone II. The former is adequate for box building, although the latter is a much higher quality adhesive & sealant.
