volume increases with the speed?

You are right, it would make sense. But not to the extent of restricting the bass to come out, or making the overall sound flat.
ASL is more complex than simply raising volume... otherwise it would be called AVL. But when turning off the function, it *should* simply not raise the sound level.

I tried turning it off but couldn't take the lack of sound quality so I turned to to low and will have to deal with it until I can make my mind up about what kind of system I want. I want to get some engine mods out of the way first.

ASL is pretty common in many vehicles these days. But, if you'e never heard of it, you've never heard of it.
It can be cool if you want to utilize it, but if you're tyring to have a conv, like someone else said, it can be very annoying.

a bump as my first post because the search feature in here = fail!
just bought a 2008 as my daily and this ASL feature has got to be the most annoying POS ever! I'm guessing I have the upgraded pioneer head unit. I've tried changing this thru the menu but the ASL settings only give me the options to set it at "low, medium or high". No where on there does it say "OFF"... any input on how to get rid of this sorry feature?

go ahead and do a serach for "volume decrease" and then let me know if you can find the answer to turning off the ASL in the Pioneer Upgrade HU. And by the way an answer of "just turn it off" doesn't help much
good looking out to "DJ08TC" for letting me know you can push the middle button in because the little blinking arrow icons only indicate you can move up or down.

Not that hard to figure out how to turn it off lol
CSil: You can turn the ASL (automatic sound leveling) off.

Heh. Depends.
I purposely installed the OEM head unit from an '07 tC in my '05 box (and added wiring) to get the rotary control and ASL. Works just great for my use.
I can pretty much leave the volume adjustment at one standard setting and hear my music just fine, parked, on city streets, or freeway.
