Well I took my car to the dealer, and they weren't able to simulate the creaking. So I called Scion HQ and they told me that they have not created a TSB yet as it is in the making however they DO have a fix for the issue posted in their technical database. The tech at Scion HQ told me to go back and do a testdrive with the mechanic. So I did and lo and behold, it creaked and popped the whole ride. So I had the mechanic call Scion HQ to get a walk-thru on the fix and I should have my baby back by the end of the day.

MORAL OF THE STORY: CALL SCION HQ! Get your problem put on record immediately, and when you take it in to the dealer tell them that you've already discussed the issue with Scion HQ and tell the mechanic to call Scion for the fix walk--thru. They WILL fix your problem within a day! Good luck guys... it's too bad we have to go through such a big production for such a stupid problem...

 

Good news, I wonder what they are waiting on for the TSB.

what creaking noise is this regarding specifically? cuz i don't hear anything while driving or turning from the roof...

 

Thanks for the update. I had the bolts tightened over three weeks ago which solved the problem, but the same noise has started up recently (but probably from a different location). This time, it doesn't sound like it is right above my head but kind of behind my head so maybe I need some other bolts tightened too. I don't know. It doesn't happen that often so I will just wait until it gets worse or I happen to be at the dealership to have it looked at. -Jayme

 

When I'm on uneven surface (and only on uneven surface - kinda when 1 wheel is higher than all others - stress on the body)- the thing creeks - I'm not sure they are going to be able to fix it perminantly, though - it's kinda normal for a plastic/glass roof car. But let's hope for the best.

 

Well when the TSB is out there will be a permanent fix available. The mechanic told me that he would reinforce the bolts with Lock-Tite and a grommet to ensure that they wouldn't back out again. Hopefully I won't have to bring it in again... :?

it is a Technical Service Bulletin, a shout-out from the big boys letting dealers know how to fix specific things that owners of certain models are experiencing. It makes it so there is uniformity from dealer to dealer on how to handle adjustments/repairs.

I'm having the creaking sound from hell as well. I can hear it constantly. I was gonna take it in to the dealer and make sure to ride with a tech to demonstrate the problem. Good idea about Scion HQ, I think I'll call them first.

 

Here's what I did:

DAY 1> I first took it to the dealer, waited for them to get around to my car, waited for them to test out the car, then they found nothing.

DAY 2> Went to www.scion.com and talked to an online advisor. He gave me the Scion HQ number. I called Scion HQ and they built a case profile for my problem and forwarded me to a specialist. I told the specialist about ScionLife and other people's experiences and solutions with the creaking moonroof. He told me that they've received a high volume of complaints for it and are currently developing a TSB for the issue. He told me to go back to the dealer, do a test run WITH the tech, and then have the tech call Technical Assistance at Scion HQ to get a walk-thru on the fix. So I went there and did just that, and my car is currently being worked on free of charge.

DAY 3> Get my car back. HOPEFULLY

 

i did the same thing
went to the deal made an appointment to do a testdrive with a mechanic but the only problem was that my sunroof wouldnt creak!! we went on speed bumps and little ditches but it wasnt making any noise. I took the car out the day before the testdrive and it creak so iono what to really do

 

make sure you take the tech when the car is HOT. That makes all the difference. The first tech that did a test run with my car did it at 10:00 PM in the freezing cold and found nothing. Drove today with the second tech when it was blazing hot out and it was all creaky as usual. Temperature definitely plays a factor.

 

UPDATE!!!!

Just wanted to let you guys know that the tech was able to fix my car in about 4 hours. I'm picking it up right this very moment yayyyy! Good luck!

YES!! definitely let us know how they were able to fix the creaking!!

 

Ok here's what the tech did. When he called Scion HQ they instructed him to do the following:

1> Remove the two bolts in the support beams, shalack them up with Lock Tite, and re-torque the two bolts back into the support structure.

2> Re-secure insulation lining (moved around from the bolts backing out)

3> Slap it all back together and pray that the Lock Tite keeps it secure enough so that it doesn't back out again.

my question is.. what is so difficult about throwing some loctite on at the factory? ya think they would've been doing this by now...

also.. this fix makes sense.. at first no one hears it.. but let it get hot (heat = expansion).. and boom! noise.. yeah because the bolts are backing out! had that on a civic gusset rear seat bolts.. slapped a bunch of synthetic grease on it and that quieted it up.. no more flexing.. i wonder if that could be a fix too for this?

 

yeah that is true, i did my test at 10 in the morning while it was still cold out, i guess i gotta wait until its hot to do the testdrive with the mechanic again
