Haha, rotary as a downfall? That's a total FAIL statement.
My dad has been building rotary engines for longer than I've been alive and helps out with a local Mazda dealer owner's race cars (close personal friend, so he only does it on occasion). He is more-so an RX7 fanatic though, and has two at the moment.
I have a black '04 RX8 (I think it may even be in the background of one of my pics on my prof) that I've never had a problem with mechanically. Granted it has only 40K on it (my poor tC gets the brunt of the miles with about 70K on an '07), but still a solid car so far.
Rotary engines are solid and can pack more HP in a fraction the size. You just need to know what you're doing, because if not, they're hella expensive to have them worked on. Don't let the fact that it's a rotary discourage you - unless you don't know anything about them, and don't want to put the money into it.
I'm an FD fan based mostly on the aesthetics, but any 7 is sex when it comes to performance and potential. I say go for it!
