i have about 1200 miles on mine, and still, no problems. if you ever owned a car that has variable valve timing, you should recognize that in higher rpms, the engine does get a little louder because of the transition. i owned a 2003 civic si and i got the same noise: a higher pitched humming sound coming from the engine and a louder exhaust note, which is characteristic of any vtec or vvti transition. learn to love that sound!!!

btw, if you're shifting or balancing the clutch/gas to the point that you feel a "pull" every time you shift gears, and you're not "trying" to race your car, try balancing the pedals a little smoother, cuz that'll do a number on your tranny. i've owned nothing but manual transmission cars and i shift like it's an automatic!!!

I have a 5 speed as well and have absolutly no problems. I think what it is, is that people are expecting a magic car that you cant hear the engine when you drive it. In that case I would have to reccomend a electric car or perhaps a prius or something. If you as me this is a bad ___ car for under $19,000. You cant expect the world for that price. But its a hell of a car so just get over it and crank your stereo if you dont like that sound!

5-spd here and lovin' it! Not a single issue at 2300 miles and I've had it a month now. Just got a small rattle in the hatch door which I plan to have the dealer look at but no other problems. :D

He paid extra to have the car shift for him, AUTOmatically... It's a luxury item to me.
Sticks are good for race cars, or weekend cars, not daily, uphill in traffic, bumper-to-bumper freeway drivers. Not everyone really cares which one is "faster"

So before I drop by the dealer to check out one of the 5 spds, is there anything specific that I should listen for on the test drive that might indicate there would be a problem with the tranny?

Default engine cooling fan

I'm pretty sure that your engine cooling fan is kicking in at 4000RPM.

Last week when I parkeked my car in my garage a strange sound from my hood made me take a look at it and its the cooling fan that kicked in, so here are my 2 cents on this..

this is a toyota...check your engine cover...there shouldnt be any problems IF you drive it right...i have 13000 on mine with no mechanical probs...i drive well and only "powershift" when i really want to...bottom line...the toyota name is behind this tranny which means customer service will always be there...but if u blow a clutch in the first 5k miles they wont warranty it...its a wear and tear part...and all u people who hate on VWs all day...me included...ive had 2...their manual trannys are very strong...their automatics are ____...high throttle pressure causes clunky shifts...but i drove a 5 speed 86 gti...with a replaced clutch...and 275000 miles on it and it ran like a charm...but everything else had to be replaced on the thing

Wow, manuals do 0-60 in a whole half a second quicker. For those of us arn't "Racers", that difference doesn't even matter.

I've got a great idea! You guys should print out this whole thread and put it away in a safe place. (sorta like a time capsule) When you get to your 40th birthday, go back and read this stuff. I wonder what you'll think of what you wrote?

In 20/20 hindsight, all of this bickering will probably sound very stupid and like an incredible waste of time. But as of right now, I dont really have anything else to be doing, so I can waste my time on here.

OOOOK I am officially annoyed!

5 SPEED ENGINES DO NOT HAVE TRANNYS!

TRANSMISSIONS ARE FOR AUTOMATICS PLEASE USE THE PROPER TERMINOLOGY.

* for idiots that don't get it and have no sense of humor, this was my bad attempt of a joke!*

Well, it already sounds stupid today. If you look at the date this thread originated, it was August 2004 (when the tC was a couple months old). These problems are old and few now. I haven't heard this problem come up lately...

Oh, and I'll be getting an auto anyways. To each their own.

Manual engines are like a tank. Less moving parts and cheaper to replace if it does break down. AUTO TRANSMISSIONS are more prone to problems and have alot more moving parts and weigh more. I'd safely say that over 90% of all automatics need a transmission overhaul at or around 100,000 - 150,000mi.
