Yeah, I live in MD so it doesn't get that hot. But I am currently down in Austin and it is way hotter than MD.
When I worked for TXU I think they said that an AC could only cool about 15 to 20 degrees lower than the outside temperature. I have no idea about a car's AC.
Like the other poster said, keeping out the light is key, solar gain really can heat things up.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Not cold enough, but do you have it on recirculate? If not, try it, that might do the trick.
The AC unit can only cool a certain amount over the intake temp. When it's really hot out that may not be enough because the outside air is so hot, but if you feed it the cooler air from inside the car, the output will be cooler too.

Pff..I thought my car was the only one that sucked until I noticed all the AC-sucks threads! Normally its freezing and of-course on the hotter days such as this week, it's been not as cool. This week has been one or two degrees shy of 100 degrees. On other days around 80 or so it works good. So it should be normal, I just wished Toyota put in a better fan and motor. The 2005+ Stangs blow air like a hurricane, which is one of the main reasons why I want one lol. So I doubt anything is wrong with your car.

Heat index is 105 today (temp of 95 or so) and mine freezes me. Coming from me that says a lot since I am warm natured.
For the person that said theirs dwindled to nothing, you obviously have an issue that needs to be repaired, like a leak.
For others, run it on recirc. As mentioned you will only see about a 15 - 20 degree drop over intake temp. If you are pulling outside air, then you are not getting anywhere on a really hot day.
Also keep in mind that the tC has a black interior which absorbs a lot of the suns energy and takes a while to cool down when really hot. Keeping your sunroof shades closed will help. Mine can take a bit to fully cool down when it has sat in the sun. When sitting in our parking ramp at work today in 95 degree temps, but out of the sun, it was freezing in a few minutes.
On some of the earlier tC's there was a tsb to up the refridgerant level on them to improve cooling. If you have an 05 you may look to see if yours was one of them.

I have the same problem, and I'm in houston as well. I left a thermometer in my car this morning, and I checked it when I got in the car this afternoon. It was 122 degrees inside my car! My car usally cools off to a habitable temperature in about 20 minutes.
