I think the point is being missed. The Spec is supposedly being marketed to the people who are lookign for a car that they can modify the hell out of, be it for shows, racing, whatever. The lack of the sunroof and other accents woudlnt matter to these people, since they are going to change the car anyways. Its not really being marketed to people who just want a cheaper tC

For shows I hardly see not having a working sunroof and other options being a good thing. You could simply buy a tC, sell the stock wheels and replace them, still have all your cool options and only spend about a grand more than the spec. If someone isnt going cheap then they can buy a stock tC and swap out what they want anyway rather than give away the stuff for almost nothing. I understand the marketing, but they just did a terrible job with this one.

I completely agree. I'm pretty sure giving up all that stuff should be worth way more than the $1500 or so you saved. What a joke.

I got my tC in Sept. 'o4. (already that long ago?) They didn't have no stinkin' Specs at that time.

I still would have gotten a regular ol' tC if I would of had a choice. As stated, the $$$ saved isn't that great of deal.

The tC spec is a good deal. $15,000 right?

However, if someone has money and they want to pimp out their car, I would do it on a regular tC since the sunroof is what makes our car "pimpin".

There are however, those people who want a performer and would like a car that's no-show but all-go. I know my opinion will become unpopular but here it goes anyways.

The tC would not be my choice of platform if I want a car that "performs". Infact, I would not go FWD.

As for a daily driver, the tC Spec is a stellar deal. I see no other car that can compete with its price. But the regular tCs are a better deal since aftermarket 17's will run you about $1,000 with decent rubbers. Engine immobilizers cost money too. Not to mention it's great to have steering radio control. Sunroofs are also about $1,000 option on the average car in the market.

$0.02 = Daily driver for the broke = Spec great deal.

For tuning: IMO, stay away, FWD

When the car is dropped on rims and blown, no one really points out the fact that the tC is the "crappy" Spec model.
I like my Spec model. Its still an upgrade from my old Civic LX.

Me, a sucker? Nooo buddy. It's true that "savings" for the stuff taken out for the Spec doesn't make it seemingly worth it is something I'm aware of. Those same things they took out I don't(barely) use anyway. Even my 89 Celica GT-S (I bought used) has cruise control(never used) and sunroof(barely use). Everyone has their own preferences and what they want from a car, and when I chose the tC I chose the Spec as it was the more basic version. I myself just need the better engine that's offered in the car and a manual transmission no options added. It's that it's rare to see that on new cars being sold as the more powerful engine is put into a package that has a bunch of luxury items made standard to that same package.

I don't regret it at all. I love all the things that I would be missing and to be hinest I probally would have never added them on so it worked well.

What "better" engine? It is the same powerplant as any other tC.

Not to mention resale value. You may save on the front end, but you lose out money on the back end as well. For the savings I think it's a poor value. But whatever floats you boat OP.

I disagree with a lot of people here. I have a tC spec and personally love it. I hate the steering wheel of the normal tCs. I don't like the wrap thing they have goin on, Much prefer my 05 style steering wheel. As for the radio controls, Don't really see the point in them since they're in arms length anyway. As for the roof, that's a matter of opinion. I personally didn't want an opening sunroof so the spec was a win for me. It's all about personal opinion. Some feel its a waste and stupid idea, But for me if It wasn't the spec, I'd probably be driving a Golf or a base line Impreza right now.

Yes there's only one engine offered for the tC, and it was the best choice out of the current engines available because anything else I think would be pointless. But I was looking at other cars also, Cobalt SS Supercharged and Civic Si which are a small step up. When you look at those two they have the top of the line engine, but also that brings along what are called "options" on the lower models which become standard and price point starting at like $21,000. That's what I meant. Looking at the tC what is an option on other cars it has standard. And at the price the tC starts at and the engine it comes with is a pretty good deal. If power is an issue then the supercharger can be added on and still be under the $21,000 price point.

I think its HORRIBLE for the price.

yes its a good idea if you want to save some money so you can go ahead and replace everything you loose with aftermarket. but in the end, scion is ripping you off.

think about it, add up what they took off, and you will quickly realize that the $1,400 savings is NOT a savings at all. They are just making MORE money off of you.

The Spec tC was marketed to the hard core modifier, I dont see any specs that are even close to being hardcore modified. Yes its personal preference on which one you buy, but for the most part I would say it was people scrimping on $1,400 , and not because they didnt want all the other stuff.

to the comment of all the stuff can be changed out easily and cheaply, obviously you havent changed it out.
new seat fabric is going to run you around $900 installed.
new wheels will run you around $1400 installed
new engine immobilizer around $400 installed
new steering wheel around $300
new grill around $150
new armrest around $70 (????)

Hmm deffinetly over $1400 is parts there.

All just my opinion tho.

Where are you getting this figure from? You just threw a number out like it applies to everyone who bought a tC.
I'm sure I could have bought a WRX STI or Evo VIII for only $20 more a month than I'm paying now....but for an extra 7 years

Jokin aside, if you compare the differences between the base and spec, it seems more like Toyota went out of their way to create a blank canvas tC.

You know guys . . i uhh . . paid 16000 out the door for my FM Spec! You sure it's like only 1400 in savings?!? Besides, aftermarket alarms, and other things can make it look so sweet. Eh??? Not too many made I heard, so it'll be cool. Kinda like the RS3 Kenstyle version where about 2500 are made!! Own it and take care of it . .it can be worth a lot down the road.
