so today my neighbor offered to paint my calipers for free so i said why not. first he jacked the front left wheel without using a stand, he kept it like that and i heard a lound bang, went out to check, . The jack wasn't positioned correctly , so one side fell and was sitting on the ground.i didnt see anything fall off. hopefully everything is OK but i am ____ed as hell. should i get it checked?

use jack stands, their fairly cheap and a very important investment if you plan on working on your car at all. You don't wanna be under your car when the car falls off the jack.

What is the proper way to use floor jacks so you dont mess up your car? Can you use one floor jack? or is it manditory that you use two? So you jack up the car up with a floor jack, then place the jack stand under the car, then lower the floor jack till the jackstands sit on the car?

another safe tip..... if you do any work that involves taking the wheels off, you can put the wheels under the car next to the jackstands. I have seen this save someone, or at least prevent any injury. one of the guys jackstands crapped out and the car fell into his wheel instead of his face.

Damaged wheels are better than a crushed head ANY day!

I think that the best thing for working under your car is to use some ramps, provided they give you a sufficient clearance.

I always have jackstands and a couple of 6x6 blocks of wood under the car just in case. Glad to hear that there was no real damage.

Get an alignment to be safe, and make your "friend" accountable for the expenses.

I won't repeat what others have said about the J word.

Get it checked. It should be okay.

The same thing happened to my car. After an AutoX, we were putting the street wheels back on my car. I didn't have a real jack with me, so I used my friends xB's jack. I jacked up and changed three wheels. When I went to get water, my friend decided to change the last wheel for me. I came back to this:

Apparently I didn't have the E-Brake set. So the car rolled when he jacked it up. Four guys lifted the car up while one slid a real jack under it. We had to bend the brake shroud back with a lug wrench because it was against the rotor. It's fine though. I drove it for 3 hours back home the following day and have gone several thousand miles since with no problems. Though I did get an alignment done recently. My tC had pulled to the right since I first got it.

I always use two jack stands, and keep the jack underneath snugged up to the bottom of the lifting surface for extra assurance.
