Convert Auto to Manual
#3
Simple as these four easy steps!
1: Take car to dealership.
2: Inform salesman that you're there to buy a brand new MT tc and want to trade in old AT tc.
3: Pay difference via financing.
4: Drive away happy.
Summation: It is possible, it would be quite difficult and involved and costs would not outweigh the benefit.

convert? why not just buy a manual from the get go. it says your a "future scion owner". if this is so, then get the manual, it'll save you money too. if its cause you don't know how to drive a manual now, don't worry. once your in the situation of being forced to drive one everyday, you'll learn quick.

1. Manual transmission = $2000 est.
2. ECU for a manual tranny car = $1500 est.
3. Linkage, clutch pedal, hydraulic system to operate clutch = $700 est.
4. A **** load of labor = $1000 est (10 hrs @ $100/hr)
Hmm by my calculations, about $5200, give or take a $1000. It would be much cheaper to trade in an auto tC on a manual tC and pay the difference.

Re: Convert Auto to Manual
Its not worth changing (may as well trade it in).. but saying the tc is a camry is just un-intelligent. In that case, a 3000 GT is a dodge minivan. And how many GMs used the 5.7? Damn, which car gets do we call all of those? I think maybe a pickup was the first way back when, so I guess the vette and everything else with a 350 is an old pickup? Some people act like its something new for two cars to share the same engine and tranny. And the latter is only partially shared since it is completely re-geared.[/quote]

Speaking from experience, just trade your car in and get a manual. It takes a LOT of knowledge, and lots of time (probably even more-so with this car since it's newer and the computers are more sensitive with everything).
I converted my 95 Beretta Z26 to a manual mostly because the automatic gearing completely sucked. The engine/trans combo I had made it interesting, because that combo never came with a 5spd manual. I was the first amongst the Beretta owners to complete the swap properly, and have helped in a couple other automatic to 5spd swaps. Believe me, it is not a walk in the park. Many hours were spent researching, comparing positional numbers, axle lengths, etc etc to get everything to work properly.
My opinion? Trade your car in. If you have a lot of stuff done to your tC, then either remove the parts/modifications and install them on the new car, or just cut your losses and start over.

Manual is cheaper than an auto when you buy new. Don't convert, and don't trade in if you already have an auto. Conversion or trade-in for stick are both terrible ideas financially. Plus, converting to a manual would pretty much wipe out 90% of your warranty coverage.
