Default Does anyone appreciate the engine immobilizer?

It seems like no one really cares about the engine immobilizer. I think this is the greatest feature of the car.

Most car thieves fall into the following categories.

1) Joyriders
2) Criminals that need a getaway car
3) Thieves stealing cars to part them out
4) Professional thieves

The only viable way to steal a Scion TC is with a tow truck, that eliminates the first two categories. There is not really a demand for brand new car parts, so that elimnates #3. Professional thieves will probably not take the time to steal a $16,000 car. So what does that leave us? That leaves us Scion owners with a car that will probably never get stolen. Does that count for something?

yes, i like that feature, but that's not totally safe. all corolla comes with engine imobolizer, but the car is on top ten list of most stelon car.

there are ways to by pass that if someone really want to.

should be for 2003, it was rank 10th, 2002 was rank 4th. i know all corolla have engine immobolizer as standard, not sure which year they start doing that. since the corrent generation corolla start at 03 model year, so i think they start doing standard engine immobolizer from then on.

my bad, it's the data for 2002.

but my point is, engine imobolizer can not stop someone steal your can, it can slow the process down. which in many case the thief will just give up. but engine imobolizer alone really not enough, you do need something extra.

sorry that its kinda off topic, but my dad was saying how car thieves today tow cars to strip them. how exactly does a car get towed? and what are possible ways to prevent a car from being towed? kinda sounds like a stupid question cause what if a cop tries to tow your car or something...

but i'm interested in ways to prevent this, otherwise i may be forced to use "the club" or whatever that thing is called these days.

you can chain it to the ground , or put air bags(pumps), and slamm'd the car down not even with a flat bed they can steal it or aleast its gonna take a looong time.

FYI - the Corolla does NOT come standard with an Immobilizer. My wife's got an '04 without one It's probably an overpriced factory option though.

I can't stand them, but that's because I install audio and alarms for a living, and they're generally a pain in the rear to work around.

Default Even With The Immobilizer

Even With The Immobilizer on the car, unless you have a VERY loud Alarm System, anybody can come up to it and ____ up the exterior, or even the interior if they break your window . Best thing is get a loud alarm system WITH the immoblizer, then your set :D .

Yes, it's standard. It prevents the engine from starting unless you have a specially encoded (and very expensive) key from Toyota.

Thanks Mudd! :D So it would be fairly difficult for a theif to try to take the car w/o a key basically? I'm sure there are ways around it that they have....but it being more difficult makes me feel a bit better leaving it in my driveway for a few weeks while I get the security system.

Nice. I did not know it was standard. Good thing I did not order the alarm on mine. I don't think I need it with keyless entry and immobilizer. I love this car

A lot of cars have immobilizers, and can still be stolen. Im not sure about the rest of the cars on the list, but every single new 2002 mustang has an immobilzer and its #24. I remember seeing a news clip online about a override thing that you can buy online (even e-bay.) Loud alrams might help, but honestly most people dont react when they hear a car alarm. Loud piezos under the dash might deter a theif, but still not 100%. LCD alarms are good because you know when your car is being tampered with (assuming your in range.), but this can be dangerous if the theif has a weapon. Turn your wheels all the way to one side...this prevents a tow truck from towing (it can tow your car, but it will weave back and forth in traffic..attracting a lot of attention.) Car insurance is the only 100% safegaurd.
