Does the gearing get on your nerves?
So I'm about 1.5 months from selling my tc. People ask me why and it's mostly the gearing, but there's other things too.
When I got it brand new, there wasn't a manual available to drive. Only auto and I didn't notice the issue then. Plus, with that salesman in the car who can concentrate on the car itself?
Anyway just wondering.

I honestly can't STAND the gearing these cars have. Had the car for about 7 months and already about to put it up for sale. It will be posted for sale in july. If anyone wants a SW 2010 scion keep an eye out.

The gearing.. Well I realize its not a highway cruiser. But most cars should be able to do all things at least kinda well. All well live and learn.
Next up, 2010 golf 5 cylinder. Manual (with somewhat tall gears.. YAY)

You could swap the transmission to the camary transmission. That will give you better gearing.
I'm in an auto and I hate driving stick in a crowded city especially during rush hour with hills and constant start-stops. Sometimes I do wish that the gearing was a bit better for highway cruising. However, no real complaints. I'm happy with the car overall.

You could swap the transmission to the camary transmission. That will give you better gearing.

There are a few youtube videos of turbo tc guys showing the cruising rpm's, as well as the top speed for each gear.
Its 60mph second gear, 90mph 3rd, 120 4th, not sure on 5th.
I want to say that 80 is 3300 rpm?

If the 6spd from the tc2 bolts up, I'd love to swap to it. The problem I find is fuel consumption in 5th gear. You could get about 100 miles per tank MORE on the highway with a little better geared 5th. At most highway speeds (65-75mph) You're right on the edge of VVT-i changing at 3-3.KRPM Get that below 3K at 70mph and it'd be fine with it. It's almost like it just needs one more gear in the 5spd manual gear box to be just right.

they made the gearing lower to make the car feel more peppy, and easier to pass without have to downshift. they never advertised the car to be a fuel saving highway cruiser. The estimated highway mgp was 28-29 and what does the car get 28-29...at least mine does.

True, and I agree, I was thinking that the only downside to the E351 is you would have to downshift more often. And mine gets about 27-28 as well, but it's just annoying that I could be getting so much better, and on the highway I'm burning the most gas, when I should be burning the least, and getting the best gas mileage.

I agree it could be better but that is not what they were making the car for. Me personally I love the gearing because it makes it a little more fun to drive. There are times I wish 1st was longer but 5th has never bothered me. I have gotten 415 miles on a tank which is pretty damn good to me. I was averaging 380 when I was doing a lot of back country driving in which my average speed was 55mph. Now I am down to like 310-315 because I do mostly city and short highway stuff.

I just feel like if you put longer gears in the car that it would just feel so slow. The trans just should have had a 6th gear added. That would've solved everything. I think more than the gears though is the delay in the drive by wire. It makes this car so hard to drive smooth it's just ridiculous. There also may be a motor mount broken/loose on mine. Not sure yet as I haven't been able to look but it feels like no matter what I do when I shift it just bucks more than any car I have driven. (every car i've owned which is up to 19 now were manual and were never like this)

Same with mine. There's also the tC2 6-speed transmission. I think there was a kit or something to make it bolt on to the tC1, I've never personally driven a tC2, though. So I'm not sure how the gearing is with them.
