Default E-Brake adjust

I was wondering if anyone out there had a how to do E-Brake adjust. I was thinking you might just have to adjust the cable to the E-brake, but i am not sure. The the reason i am doing this is because my brake handle pulls up to much, not allowing the brake to be very strong. That is why i was wondering if it is something i can do on my own?

The best way (so as not to run out of cable adjustment), is to adjust it at the brake drum, then add a little adjustment to the cable, rather than trying to adjust it all the way with the cable.

I realized that the question may come up... so to clarify,

If you were to remove the rear rotor, there is a drum brake inside of it. That is your actual e brake. If you pop the plastic plug out of the rotor hat and rotate the hole to the bottom, you can look up and see the brake adjustment. If you turn that toothed ring you will adjust the play out of the ebrake.

If you have an excessive amount now, and just adjust using the cable, you will run out of cable adjustment when the cable stretches over time.

I've had the same problem since I've gotten the car, but really paid to mind to it. However if you do decide to go and do this a DIY article would be awesome! I mean if you decide to and have the time. GL sorting it all out. If nothing else let me know how hard it is to do.

you can adjust it by the two bolts that holds the cable...you have to take out the middle plastic of the center console ( the cup holders) to locate the bolts....you have to use two wrenches to adjust...

you know I thought I saw a DIY for this w/pics somewhere. I know I need mine tightened since I have to pull it almost as far as it can go for them to work well.

There was a better one out there on a forum where some guy talked all kind of trash about doc I not knowing what he was doing saying there was a drum brake back there. So doc proceeded to post a diy showing the brake drum... best ownage I have ever seen The guy had nothing to say afterward :D

Again, if it is as loose as you state above, adjust it at the drum first. If not you are just going to run out of cable when it stretches again.

And you dont have to remove the rotor as shown in that diy, the hole in the side of the rotor hat is for adjusting the brake.

The pictures show the adjuster pretty well. You don't need to take off the drum to adjust it, just to prove to certain people they don't know what they're talking about.

Just be careful with the adjuster teeth. I was talking to a friend while I was adjusting the brake and somehow managed to chip off a tooth on the gear.

Wow, you broke one of those teeth? I never have come close to that adjusting drum brakes!

You know doc, while you were in there, you should have devised an auto ajuster like many regular drum brakes have :D Reverse, bump the ebrake, and walla, adjusted brake :D

Ok i ended up adjusting my E-Brake the easy way. For those of you who just want to adjust it so it doesn't come up as far, all you need to do it just pop off the center console and tighten the two nuts to the cable. It is prob not the best way to do it because i am sure over time the cable is still going to stretch back out and you are not going to be able to tighten the nuts anymore. If you are really looking to adjusting it big time , then i would use the DIY version for adjusting the back brakes. But all is done and it is working good so far and it only allows my E brake to go up 7 clicks. Thanks alot for he help.

And now you've increased the tension on the cables without increasing the braking force. I hope you don't park on a lot of hills.

DOC, the thread is classic.

And to the people adjusting at the ebrake, the only reason its holding is because its allowing you to apply more pressure on the cable. Pull it to hard one day, and it could snap and send your car rolling. Do it correctly or dont do it. Simple as that.
