I haven't read all the posts, sorry, but I do have this as advice ....
Go to your local DMV and apply for a lost title. Tell them you lost the title to your vehicle and need a replacement. Do not tell them the whole story.
You'll have to bring info about the vehicle like an insurance card and such or whatever you have left to prove you owned it .... once you have the replacement title, report it stolen.
May take some time, but it may also foil their plans .... Otherwise post up pics and those of us that live down here in the Miami / ft lauderdale area will keep an eye out and make sure if spotted to imobilize the vehicle until you get down here ... LOL
Laterz ...

ok.
you called local police-they were no help
you called FBI-they were no help
so your only other option is to get a lawyer and as much info as you can.
i dont understand how you sold the car without getting any of this guys info, even if it was fake.
but, there had to be some real info if he got a $14,000 check cuz banks dont give that much money to ppl who dont really exist.
so get as much of his info as you can (if you have his banks info tell them what happened, and how he said the check was lost but you have it...etc.) see if they will tell you anything.

because at the end of the day the guy that stole your car has the title in his hand that you signed, also the bill of sale says $0 so technically he owes you nothing.
this could then possibly be turned around on you and you would get accused of fraud...

you can do a reverse trace on a vin# and plates. it only costs a few bucks and it works i've done it before when my old supra was stolen. i would suggest you go to the guy personally rather than spend extra money on a lawyer.
or, just give tcpete the info and let him go apesh!t on the guy. then send pete a nice basket of fruit and a case of beer and call it good.

^to go along with my last post, you said that the car was already registered by the DMV by the other guy. right? so when you go to the DMV and tekk them you lost the title, i highly doubt they will give you another one becuase im sure it will show in their system that the car belongs to someone else.
...
however, this is where you flip it around, and say "o yea, how is that possible? its my car. who is it registered to?"
lol, maybe you could get some info that way

I just dont understand why you would sign the bill of sale 0.00 to avoid taxes. If he wanted the car that bad, tell him to pay the taxes.
Sorry to say that this could have been avoided in about 1000 different ways, I just hope you learn your lesson about craiglist.
TC Pete - if you find him - please post some pics of his beaten and battered body

Well it appears things may get worse. I spoke to my friend who is a new attorney and he says I made a big mistake. He says if I take this to court I can be in trouble as being an accessory to Tax Fraud if I admit that I gave him the car so he doesnt have to pay taxes and he was paying me for it. He says by law its the guys car since I signed over a Bill of Sale, Title, and Florida DMV Gift Form. He said those are legal documents. But my friend says he wont be able to take this case since he just got hired at a law firm, and he must do their work first. He did refer me to a top-notch lawyer that may be able to sort this issue out.

ok try this:
http://govt-files.com/vin-number-search.htm
A site like this will cost you like $30, and it may turn up a current address for the vehicle. With enough members in Florida, I am sure whereever the vehicle is someone here can at least verify the vehicle is there.
If you can verify an address then you can simply show up at his door with the law and demand payment. Forget what the title said, once it is re-registered a new one is issued and nothing appears on it from past transactions, from that point on you both are on equal grounds and the burden of proof will be in your corner ..

When you called the FBI, did you ask for their fraud division?
A lost title will not work becasue its already registered and they will not give you the name unless you know someone or you get someone on their first day.. highly unlikley. If you have your copy of the bill of sale with his "address" or a copy of his licence post the address so someone can check it out for you to see if it was a faux address or not.

Also, does anyone know if carfax tells wher ethe vehicle was registered? i know it shows when it was sold and reregistered but it may give an approximate location as well.
