Finally a TRD CAI that's CARB-approved for the tC???
Hey guys! Is this real or what? I was searching around the CA Air Resources Board to look for legal CAIs here in Cali...then I found this EO issued July 30, 2007:
http://arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/de...o/D-425-21.pdf
Basically its a TRD cold air intake for the 2008 Scion tC...god, I hope it also applies for 2007 (mine!)..can't wait.
EO: D-425-21 View PDF
EO Date: 7/30/2007
Manufacturer Name: Toyota Racing Development
Device: TRD Cold Air Intake
Device Type: Air Filter / Intake Modification
Part_Number: Model_Specification: Modification_Allowed: Remarks:
2008 model year Scion xB and tC passenger cars equipped with a 2.4 liter engine The TRD Cold Air Intake includes a modified air filter housing with a Camry hydrocarbon trap that is permanently heat staked to the lid of the housing, and air intake tubing from the new air filter housing to the stock throttlebody. No other modifications are required for installation other than the replacement of the stock air filter housing and intake tubing with the TRD Cold Air Intake.
That's from their Exec. Order Listing section of their website. There's no part number yet so I guess TRD has yet to release it soon.
What do you think???

I think its legal if you have the Toyota/Scion dealership install it for u, then it's considered legal. Cause that's actually how I have it, but it could also be because I'm on the other side of the country.

it's only CARB legal if it's CARB legal. Cops don't give a flying hoohoo if your dealer or your brother or your lost cousin Ernie installed it or not. If it doesn't have a CARB Exempt sticker, you're getting a ticket.

x2...depending on which state you live in, some states have adopted CARB's (California Air Resources Board) strict regulations on emissions control. A lot of aftermarket auto parts are illegal for street/highway use. So one of the many tasks of this Board is to evaluate those parts and issue exemptions, or EOs (Executive Orders), on certain aftermarket parts/upgrades for cars. As for CAIs, you have to have a sticker that indicates the EO number that exempts it from law. Caution tho, some may be legal in a state but it doesn't mean it's streetlegal in that same state.
This is why I am so excited with this EO on the TRD CAI for the tC..cause when it comes out, I'll have the peace of mind that I won't get a ticket if I have it installed. For now check with your Highway Patrol or DMV which ones are street-legal!

You'll still have SMOG issues if you put it on a 2007!
Yeah the cops don't care as long as it has a sticker, but if you pull into a SMOG shop and they do your physical inspection (as required in CA) they will look it up the EO/CARB # to make sure it matches the vehicle. And if it's only for a 2008 (which it seems to be) your at a loss.

Yeah I know . Sigh. I've been thinking about that too....I'm just hoping the '08 CAI's backward-compatible (with '07). Otherwise, best bet would be if you're in good terms with your Smog check shop (which I'm not)...or do what someone from a Dealership "hinted" me: just install back your stock ones so you can pass Smog Check . I said, "uhhh, oookaaaaay...."

The TRD cold air intake part number shows that it can be used on 2007-2008 Model Year tC's both manual and automatic tranny.
it is designed to work with the factory ECU and emissions system and according to TRD, it is emissions-legal in all 50 states.

The only reason a CAI is not legal on newer cars is due to the fact they don't have a carbon filter on them. the carbon filter stops fumes from coming out when you shut off the car. Nobody wants to add them to their CAI because it reduces most power gain at high rpm which defeats the purpose. AEM achieved a 1hp gain with the carbon filter.

And like I said (and verified)----although a certain CAI (like TRD) may be emissions-legal, it may not be 'street-legal' at all....IOW, legal only off-road / racetrack use...before, only the K & N Typhoon Intake System is CARB street-legal (which I've read a lot in SL that it s*cks a lot)....this year tho CARB approved a 'mystery' TRD CAI for the '08 tC.......guess we will have to wait for TRD to release it

^^ yeah..
the '08 xB sure is CARB approved because it also incorporates that charcoal filter that is needed.
haven't seen a thing about it for a tC.
or the mysterious ribbon blue color that apparently was a tC color too.. (like wha????)
