Default Got Rice?

So yesterday, I let my friend drive my tC, because he'd been ragging on it's level of refinement compared to, say, an Audi A4. This is the first time I had been outside my car when someone else was driving it, and the rice factor of the exhaust (TRD) was like a swift blow to the stomach. Previous to this, I had always smiled a little when pulling away from a stop without the stereo on, because I liked the way it sounded from the cabin. Deep, inoffensive, pleasant. But as I listen to my car drive away, we're talking like 10 on a ten-point rice scale. Like a slightly better-quality Pep Boys cop-magnet coffee can exhaust. And I could still hear it from numerous blocks away. I know some of you disagree, but I wonder about the sound from other, different aftermarket exhaust systems. I know someone has the Magnaflow, and hopefully someone has something different to compare it to. How loud are your aftermarket, non-TRD exhausts from outside the car? Do they make a pleasant bass note or do they sound like some kind of irritated, juiced bull with a megaphone?

I feel like a little part of me dies every time I pull away from a stoplight now. My car is no different sounding than an automatic Cavalier sponsored by AutoZone.

I totally agree with you man... I kept reading on the forum that every1 said it was a great sounding exhaust so i went to the dealer that had it on the test car. I drove it and it sounds like CRAP! It's not deep at ALL! i dunno what every1 is talking about

that low tone everyone is looking for can only be found on a late 60's american muscle car - a Chevelle for example.

These aftermarket exhausts, nomatter who makes them, all sound like farts...

Finally, someone else has said something.

The people who seem to make the most fun of rice are rice themselves....

Really? I hate the way those things sound. The way the turbo manifold is set up, the car basically has exhaust pulses like a two-cylinder, and the exhaust sounds like it.

But if you like it, more power to ya .

I kind of liked the TRD exhaust when I heard it on the tC. I would like a deeper exhaust note, but I think that it was pretty good for a 2.4L. I really liked how quiet it was at highway cruise, no drone at all.

If you want a deep growl, then I suggest a V8---with a dual exhaust/magna flow 40. You do realize that it's only a 4-banger, right?? LOL!

The 4-cylinder Porsches had nice, deep, growly exhausts.

I have only heard one zoom by me once and it sounded ok to me. I'm going to have to check up on that though thanks for the heads up.

I luv the deep sound of my current v6 grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

You don't need american muscle for a good sounding exhaust.

The 924, 944, and 968 in all variations used inline 4 cylinders and are what you're most likely to see and hear. These are what I was referring to.

The 64, 356, and 914 are the only models I know of that used a flat 4 and the last 914 was produced in 75 so good luck seeing one of those 3 on the street, much less hearing it run.

That interests me greatly, but I can't sell anyone anything until I have some sort of replacement. As for those of you who say the only car you can find a non-rice exhaust note on is American, that is false. STi's, EVOs, SRT-4, all have nice, rumbly sounds that don't sound like the engine is yelling through an Xbox Live voicemask or something. My friend has a WRX with the STi exhaust system, and that sounds perfect.
