well if they dont want to fix it, take it to another dealer.. remind scion corporate that it's under warranty and their obligation to fix it!

Hmm Well I had a similar problem on rare occasions. I don't drive my car much, but it does seem to not want to go into that 3rd gear or slips into place after it grinds. I thought it was me, but maybe it is not. Hmm. I have installed a short shifter TWM recently, would the dealer blame it on that even if it was happening prior to the shifter?

Maybe we just need to warm up the car more often before heading out. The motor and tranny does have to circulate the lube so it does not make it difficult shifting.

dude from skimming through this thread so many dealers sound nice. I took my car to the dealer in the FIRST 2 WEEKS of having the car cause 3rd gear would grind and they wouldn't do anything. I took it to 3 other dealers and they did the same thing. I called corporate and they simply called the dealer and nothing was achieved. it makes me FURIOUS.

^^ so why put up with excuses? get an attorney, watch how quick they fix your problems. Ridiculous that you have to go to that level, but they don't want to pay for their problems, design/quality. They figure it's easier to make this as it is, and its cheaper to deal with the attorney's on a case by case basis than to redesign the trans.

I feel everyone has this kind of problem, is that any way we can show our voice to them and ask them to fix it for us?

i wanted to but school was creeping closer at the time it was summer and i couldn't afford to have my car down for so long because 3rd and 4th gear completely burnt out in the end and so i bought a junkyard trans and had my best friend put it in. 15k later it's running well but i feel like theres no use fighting anymore since it's fixed.. kinda

I've had the same issues as many of you. My second gear would grind constantly and third gear became nearly impossible to engage. I took it to 2 different dealers 5 times total, and had a toyota corporate rep involved twice before I got the transaxle replaced. That was at about 20K miles, now at 36K the issues with second are starting to recur and third has more resistance than usual prior to engagement.

I just bought the extended warranty because this car has been such a PITA.

3rd gear doesn't grind for me per say, but it isn't a smooth shift in the morning for the first 3-5min or so, depending how cold it is. All I have to do is wait just an extra second for the synchros to do their job and then it's smooth. But I usually forget every morning for those first couple of 3rd gear shifts.

2nd Gear also wants to be a bastard when it's really cold. But if you're patient when your car is cold and just shift slowly and wait for the synchros, then its not a problem.

I have an 09, for reference.

So, I've had this exact same transmission problem (grinding into gears) as alot of other tC owners, TWICE before with my manual transmission. It's an '08 tC, and the first two times it was covered under warranty, no issues. I'm now experiencing it AGAIN for the third time! This time it's grinding while downshifting from 5th to 4th, so before my gear went out all together (like it has previously) I took it back into the dealership. My car currently has roughly 72k on it, but the transmission is still under warranty due to the fact that the transmission was replaced under warranty within a yr ago. Suddenly, Toyota is telling me that this issue ISN'T covered under warranty, and that it's 'abuse' on my transmission.... for the EXACT same issue as they covered for me twice before at the SAME dealership... I've already contacted Toyota corporate, and they're no help whatsoever (my car has been in the shop for over a month now with NOTHING done to it), so I'm preparing to resort to legal action. Does anybody happen to have any statistics or anything regarding how common or how often this problem occurs? I know I've definitely seen posts on these forums with owners who've gone through 3 transmissions all under warranty. HELP!
