Default HELP: Brake Question, 50,000 Miles, Costs, Where? Thanks

Coming up on 50,000 miles. Never had brake work done. I am pretty sure I need some though since my brakes squel so loud that my car turns heads. And trust me, it ain't because it is pretty LOL. I can hear the brake squel from inside my car also. Quick questions to pros:

1. What needs replaced (pads, rotors, disc, etc)?

2. Where do I get them replaced (please recommend something other than dealer since dealer is the only place I know and last time got charged over $300 for a free recall when they replaced a bunch of other crap LOL)?

3. What will it cost?

Thanks!

About 50 bucks...

Pads and turn the rotors....flush the brake fluid if you feel froggy. Takes about an hour of your time from start to finish.

DIY FTW!!

I can't do it myself. How much at the dealership or at the store?

dont forget the 6-pack, 12 if a buddy is helping.
try not to finish the beer before the brake job is done or else you might forget why the hell you took off the tires and now you need to make a beer run.

DIY is the best option, its simple to do and saves a lot of money which you can later spend on beer.

How about Midas? I looked on google and they say they do brake work. Any good? I don't want to spend more than $500 on brakes.

I don't have a lift and I haven't changed entire brakes since HS (when I had a full hydraulic lift LOL). I scheduled an appointment with Midas tomorrow morning. Hopefully I don't get completely screwed on costs.

Last time I was at Jiffy Lube they said I needed to rotate my tires and charged me $90 total for oil change and tire rotation. Man I was ____ed!

nah you dont need a lift, just a jack and jack stand for safety.

before they do anything, make them give you a 'free' inspection on what you need done, go to autozone and buy the stuff and DIY. Since you have done it before it should take too long.

Iv taken apart my 350 engine in the parking lot of my apartment complex to fix a blown head gasket. Before I started taking stuff off, I had never done it before. I learned and saved a butt load of money, I would say about $800+

Respect

I used to be into all that stuff back in HS and even college. Took an engines class in college and was taking apart all types of engine stuff. I even had one open while it was firing. Now that was pretty damn cool. Now I'm old and don't really have time or patience for that now haha. Although I did take out the interior a couple of months ago for dynamat and fix my system. :D

I wish I had those classes back in HS and college. Hell, I would still be in school most likely. I just learn by doing it and reading up on it. Doesn't hurt to have a buddy thats done it before either.
I used to drive a 1968 chevy truck for the past 6 years until i blew the rear end and ended up buying my tC to save gas and for air conditioning. Im in the process of fixing it up again, got the rear end redone with a posi and better gears, rebuilding the engine with even more high end parts. But its all on the back burner on low because gas is too high for me to drive that beast, I would only get about 10 miles to the gallon but it was always getting looks. I miss my truck

In our HS we had 3 classes of automotive stuff. Usually if you took all 3, you basically had a easy ride to NADC in Nashville. I just took the 1st one.

In college we had a 3rd year engines class. It was by far one of the best classes I ever took. Basically we took apart and put together everything engine-wise.

It is a swb-350 with a 700r4 tranny. The only thing stock on it was the body, frame, brakes. I replaced pretty much everything else.

It would have been nice to learn the proper way to work on an engine rather than taking plenty of shade-tree courses

SWEET truck! I'd go with a set of Weld Wheels, though....
