Default High rev at Startup

Hey y'all,

Got a minor problem. I had to disconnect the battery a couple of months ago. Ever since the engine has been revving high (between 1,000 & 1,500 rpm) at start up until the engine warms. Didn't do that before (used to rev at 700-800 at startup). Anyone else have this problem?

New cars are programmed to start with additional revs to heat up the cat. converter faster. the faster it heats up, the better they control emission output.

yeah this is perfectly normal...i'm really shocked that ur car idled that low at first. But especially when it's cold out...it will idle higher to warm it up.

All right, thanks for the help. The thing that threw me off was the fact that it started it (or at least I first noticed it) RIGHT after I had to disconnect the battery.

well, disconnecting the battery would have wiped out all the info the ECU had before for idleing.
so when you started it again it wouldn't know where it would be safe to idle without cutting off, so it would idle high to be safe. and it will eventually relearn a new idle and idle low again.

*this one time i had my car and my friends xA idle one night to warm up, they eventually got to about 500rpm, it was so low i couldnt even tell the cars were running, they were like yea were cool, just let us know when you wanna go and were off/

Default warm up

about how long on an average do you let your tC warm up in cold temps around 40degrees... i noticed that even if the car is off for about 2 to 3 hours the engine temp needle is way below and the rmps are rather high... i normally let my car heat up in the morning but after work (about 8 hours later) should i let it warm up
around what temp range is it good to pull out... can i risk just pulling out or give it time to reach a little over the second knotch?
my RMP is normally about 1200 to 1500 i wait to about a 1000 to move...
would it be wrong to pull out immediately..?

I've always thought it was a good idea to let the engine idle for at least a couple minutes before taking off, to let the engine oil warm up and lubricate everything. Usually if it's below freezing out, I'll start mine up and let it warm up for ten minutes or so.

Nope. The proper way to warm up our engines are by driving gently... it should be warm within 10 minutes, if that.

You should wait until the needle reaches normal temp before pressing the car hard(er).

it wont hurt anything to just get in and go as long as you take it easy til its warmed up.
